I was very apprehensive about this when I first heard of it, but the more I see, the more intrigued I am. My rankings of the movies are:

1. Rocky (4.5 stars)
2. Rocky Balboa (4 stars)
3. Rocky IV (3 stars)
4. Rocky II (2.5 stars)
5. Rocky III (1.5 stars)
6. Rocky V (0 stars)

I have to admit, I thought that Rocky Balboa was a good ender to the Rocky series, and (like Rambo) I was hoping that it would be the last Rocky film made. However, this new wrinkle might pique my interest with Rocky as a trainer instead of a fighter.

So will the soundtrack to Creed be done by...Creed? :borg:

Rocky V would no longer be the worst of the sequels...

Rocky III would still be the worst of the sequels.

Agreed. I don't know why Rocky V gets such a bad rap. At least it tried to do something different with the franchise. Each of the other sequels is just rehashing the template of the first film.

My problems with Rocky III:

1. Rocky's reaction to Mickey's death was over-dramatized and drawn out.
2. Rocky was physically too small for the final fight.
3. Paulie's jealousy was annoying. You would think he would appreciate the guy who brought him and his sister so much cash.

Also, Rocky III felt like Sylvester Stallone was playing Sylvester Stallone instead of Rocky Balboa. The character just wasn't there. He wasn't quite there in Rocky IV either but at least he was closer.

It's a shame because Rocky is one of those movies that I had seen endlessly parodied & acclaimed for decades before I actually saw it. I figured, after all this time, it couldn't possibly be good enough to justify all of this pop culture attention. Then, when I finally saw it, I just went, "Wow." It is a masterpiece that transcends all of the critical acclaim and all subsequent attempts for pop culture to cheapen it. (Casablanca is the only other well-established classic that has such enduring power for me.)

So, while it would be difficult for Creed to come anywhere near the power of Rocky, I have a feeling it will surpass most of the sequels (except for Rocky II, which is the only sequel even remotely worthy of the original).

Agreed. I enjoyed Rocky V a lot. I loved how they made fun of Don King. I thought Tommy Morrison did a great job of playing a believable villain. And, to your point, "Rocky" definitely felt like "Rocky" again.

That's an interesting point. There was something lost there. I guess I always chalked it up to an evolution or maturity of the character. I definitely felt like Rocky IV brought back at least some of the character's old charm.

I rather enjoyed Rocky Balboa. I liked it better than II, III, and V (but not I or IV). I am expecting Creed to be on par with Rocky Balboa. It does look like it will surpass many of the other sequels.

Just saw the trailer seconds ago, and am surprised how it is that Creed's broke, or seems to be in the same financial state as Rocky when he was starting out.

People change. They evolve. I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility than 5 years of the glitz of being The Champ "refined" Rocky as a person to the point where the rough edges were smoothed out.

As for Creed, I want to see it. I want to see how Adonis seeks out Rocky and how they bond over the course over the movie. Though...the trailer implies that Rocky is alone and shows both Adrian and Paulie's graves...so where's Rocky Jr.? Did he forget the events of "Rocky Balboa" and go back to being the distant son again?

WHaaaaat?! No grave for Mickey?!

I forget...it's been so long since I've seen ANY Rocky movie...weren't Paulie and Adrian brother and sister...or just related somehow?

Mickey was buried in a mausoleum in Rocky III. Paulie was Adrian's brother, yeah. He was alive in "Rocky Balboa," in 2006, while that film showed that Adrian died earlier from cancer.

So is Creed supposed to be 30 in this? And he's just starting his boxing career.

Gaaahhh....you're right! It has been many, many moons since I last saw Rocky III. :)

Yep, interesting premise, interesting trailer. Hope it turns out well. And Michael B. Jordan gets a chance to get the stink of the "Fantastic 4" off him.

Well Rocky was 29/30 when Apollo gave him the title shot. So its not outside the realm of credibility. And we don't know enough yet about Adonis' history. He could've been doing amateur or club fights for awhile. Kinda like Rocky.

No it didn't. And, coming as that movie did only three short years after my mom's death (something I've never gotten over), and Talia Shire bearing a small (but significant) resemblance to mom, that movie left a bad taste in my mouth.

I can't watch any movie with John Ritter in it because he died of the same thing that killed my dad.

I'm always up for more Rocky, even bad Rocky is still better than a lot of movies.

I am seeing this tomorrow. This is getting amazing reviews and people are suggesting it deserves the major awards. For best picture, director, lead actor for Michael B Jordan and Stallone for for supporting actor!

I am a Rocky fan but I never would have expected this when this was first announced. I was very skeptical that Sly agreed to do this.

Give us your full review. I am anxious to see it, but I am not sure when I will have a chance to see it.

It came out here today. I got back from it an hour ago.

It is very, very good. It's a bit late to do a full review, but as somone who is a big Rocky fan I can say that really liked it. Stallone did his once-a-decade thing of proving he deserved that damn Oscar, and caused some eye-stinging moments - which is impressive considering the last time I cried at a movie I was 8 years old, and was watching the last few seconds of Titanic.

The only possible downside I can think of, is that some might see it as being a little too similar to the original. Then again, you can say that about nearly every sports movie that has been made since.

Oh, and a special shout out to Tessa Thompson. I hadn't seen her in much before, but she really stood out in this.

The biggest role I've seen Tessa Thompson in was Dear White People and I thought she did fine there. She was also in Selma. When I was watching Heroes over the summer I found out she was in Season 4, part of the carnival.

As for Creed, it was a good film, a solid entry in the Rocky franchise, and will likely go down as one of the top entries in the whole franchise. I don't remember all of the Rocky films-particularly one and two so I don't know where I would fit it exactly in ranking it among the other Rocky films. It was similar to the first film in some respects, but I felt it took inspiration from some of the other films in the series as well. Even though I thought Rocky Balboa was a great send off for the franchise, Creed showed there was still some life left in the Rocky story.

This is getting some serious positive buzz. People are talking multiple Oscar nominations...which is surprising to say the least. Is it really that good? I mean, I'm a Rocky fan but I didn't expect such widespread praise to be given to this. Wow.
