News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

But also, can pets get infected from other animals outside, and then infect their owners? This could mean a lot more trouble.

Not to mention, if tigers are infected, can it be terminal for them, as it can be for us? They are an endangered species already, with only about 4,000 individual tigers left in the world.

Huh, that is interesting. It's worth a study to see if maybe there'd be a way to borrow those antibodies the cats are creating.

I agree. I have to hope for good news because everything else is just bad and depressing.
UAB came up with remdesivir recently.

Back in Jan 2018, one Adam York in Pinson Alabama suffered from something very like COVID. I wonder if something in his body chemistry or genes might point a way out.

I read about liquid breathing and wonder if that might be combined with other ways to oxygenate blood

Totally OT, but is that... XP? That's a blast from the past!
no, Vista :) If you'd like more old fashioned stuff I have a ME machine as well. It has excellent image editing software, that's why I kept it.

Now, as I understand it, it's not that Johnson's condition has worsened, but that he still shows symptoms ten days after testing positive.
A man who stands by his convictions:
Being a conservative, he was to conserve his illness as long as possible. And as for him being admitted into a hospital - he always was a vigourous defender of the "splendid isolation" policy.
See? All in character. ;)
(I wouldn't joke if he was really in a critical condition, but this is just too lovely a pass to not turn it into a goal)

Good news from Germany: our rate of new infections keeps stagnating. The isolation works.
And good news in my family: my sister in law will return on Thursday, having worked with infected patients for the last fortnight. She'll now have to go into quarantine herself for 2 weeks. Fortunately, the local Red Cross has a shopping service for quarantined people. But since I'll be in her town tomorrow, I'll leave a care parcel with basic supplies and some sweets to last her till Tuesday (Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday shops are closed, and on Saturday the delivery service doesn't work)

Regarding the American order to stop the export of N95 masks to Canada, it's appalling for many different reasons. This pandemic is worldwide, which requires a worldwide effort to combat it, each country waging its own battle against it. Canada is your closest ally, the kind that you will often come to to borrow sugar without asking anything in return. It seems that the President and his friends have short memories regarding what Canada has done for their country. During times of crisis and war, we've often stepped in and helped without so much as a word.

We've sent troops to die alongside U.S troops in Afghanistan, sent help to New Orleans after Katrina, not to mention numerous wildfires raging in California. But perhaps the most recent example of friendship and loyalty was during the 9/11 crisis. In a story that I feel every American should know, as told in the Broadway musical Come From Away, a little town called Gander in Newfoundland agreed to have 239 at-risk flights diverted to its small town. The influx of travelers overwhelmed the small town, but the town inhabitants went out of their way to make them feel welcome, feeding them out of their own pockets and hosting many of them in their homes, and not once did they ask for something in return. Many of these people formed long-lasting friendships, and I believe even some got married. I could go on with many other examples as those are the most recent, but I'll stop there.

With all Canada has done for its closest ally, it's more than a little disappointing. Yes, I get it, you need those masks. Guess what, as another country fighting equally as hard against this pandemic, we need them too! We're all in the same boat. To help you curve the spread, to prevent its spread across the border, it'd be nice to have a little help from our friends. Limiting the supply to other countries is not the way to do this. The irony? Canada supplies many of the materials needed to make these masks! Without these, without the trade of these important materials with your ally, the masks wouldn't get made. Canada has tried securing a shipment of three-million masks which was stopped at the border this weekend. You'd think it was a drug-running run. To be blocking much needed supplies during a worldwide pandemic is not just wrong, it sets out dangerous humanitarian implications.

Brit here: Would never vote for Johnson, but I really hope he pulls through - this country has been stretched out of all recognition already. It must be such a worry for his family. For someone who grew up in the 90s, I find the 21st Century to be the most awful place.

It sounds like we've got some good news on that front.

Ottawa reports progress in talks with U.S. over medical supplies as 3M strikes deal to send masks to Canada

CBC article said:
Canadian ministers and officials have been trying to reverse the United States' decision to invoke the Defense Production Act to force Minnesota-based 3M to prioritize orders from the U.S. government for N95 respirators at the expense of foreign orders, including some from Canada.

Earlier today, U.S. President Donald Trump said he had reached an agreement with the company and was now "very proud to be dealing with 3M."

A statement from the company said it has struck a deal to import 166.5 million respirators into the U.S. over the next three months, primarily from its manufacturing facility in China.

"The plan will also enable 3M to continue sending U.S. produced respirators to Canada and Latin America, where 3M is the primary source of supply," the statement said.

Boris johnson has just been moved into intensive care as his condition has worsened.
ouch :( I hope he recovers. It's unusual for someone that young getting hit so hard. Maybe his doctors are just a bit more careful than with ordinary patients?
I'm more worried about the Royals. Prince Philipp's health hasn't been good lately. If he got infected his chances would be almost nil :(

These people are f***ing over Americans by seizing shipments, including those bound for Kentucky, which voted for them. Why are you acting surprised?
More importantly, why are you making an appeal for decency?

I'm speaking rhetorically, of course. I mean, kind of, there is nothing sacred, no institutions, no friends, not anymore. It's all a petty, degenerate power games to see who will debase themselves the most.

One of the positive things to come out of all this is how it shows how utterly useless celebrities and athletes are and how ridiculous it is to pay them millions. They are the definition of non-essential.

When I was a kid I used to love sports, especially hockey since I'm Canadian, but now I don't watch them, don't like them, just don't care. The disgusting amount of money athletes and actors make...

We're a flawed species. I'm a utopian socialist and make no apologies for it. There's enough wealth in this world to feed, clothe and shelter everyone but we just don't care enough to make the world what it could be.
