News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

This generation has been witness to many remarkable and earth-shattering events. I haven't seen anything with so much impact on a global scale since 9/11, not counting Meghan and Harry's departure from royal duties (I jest). COVID-19 has made such an imprint on our way of life and on 21st century civilization as a whole.

Seven San Francisco Bay Area counties as of this writing have a shelter-in-place order from midnight through April 7. I work for a public utility company, which offers telework options, and yet only a select number of staff can work from home, and certainly not 100% of the time. Still, I'm grateful I'll continue to get paid.

I think that this is a little more exciting than 9/11. It's an exciting time to be alive that's for sure. The meme potential has been virtually unlimited and some things will be talked about for a long time.

I've been practicing social distancing my whole life so this isn't new to me. My wife and I don't eat in at a restaurant (because of people and tips) we always get carry out. I wash my hands several times a day because I like them to feel clean. I wish people wouldn't be afraid to make a scene if they saw someone not wash their hands after leaving the restroom. Public shaming is a very good tactic.

Use to be not washing your hands would most often just make you ill to some degree ...

Now, Not Washing Your Hands, might be risking your own life and could actually kill somebody else.

They've just announced a case in Canada (Muskoka area) where a man died, but it wasn't a confirmed case until after he died.

^ The first Canadian death outside of BC, bringing our total so far to five.

Today the Ontario government (Muskoka is in Ontario, for those not familiar) officially declared a state of emergency. Theatres, conert venues, libraries, rec centres, daycares, private schools, and bars have been ordered closed until at least March 31. (Previously, we were just discouraged from going.) Restaurants are allowed to stay open, but will be limited to delivery and takeout.

Most businesses and workplaces are allowed to remain open at this point. Fortunately, many workplaces that can allow their employees to work from home have already implemented it. Unfortunately, there are also many who can't.

Hang on, American Democrats! You're actually holding primaries today? In this situation? When all gatherings of more than 50 people should be called off, when you have these ridiculously long queues with people standing in line for hours in order to vote, with the majority of voting people statistically being of an age that makes high risk cases? What the fuck is wrong with you people? Seriously, either you're suppressing the vote because people behave rational and stay home, or you're putting the lives, the lives!, of a whole lot of people at risk, as well as contributing to the further spreading of this virus. This is cynical and irresponsible to the extreme, and everybody who gave their okay to this should be disqualified for any decision-making position, if not tried for reckless endangerment. Fuck! With all the legitimate criticism of Trump's handling of this crisis, and you go and do this.

One of the problems with panic buying is that it gives you an incentive to buy even if you're not panicked. Running out of toilet paper is just annoying, so if you see other people buying it up...

I work for a New York supermarket. Yesterday was bad. We ran out of toilet paper, chicken, all beef except the high-end steaks, rice, and maybe pasta (still a few boxes on the shelf when I left). Strangely, beer sales looked about normal.
My heart goes out to all of you that work in stores. Thank you for being willing to go in and keep them open for us!

Now the Republicans are complaining when people vote.

What's going to happen come November when the polls are still closed because of Republicans? The U.S. becomes a despotic nation where choice has been taken away.

If you think the pandemic is bad now, just hope that the pandemic doesn't stop efforts to contain Ebola in African countries. If you look at the map of Africa, SARS-CoV-2 is concentrating itself in the same regions where Ebola is, but not in the surrounding countries.

Once the medical staff is no longer able to keep Ebola at bay, boom there goes Africa. Do you know how difficult it will be to fight the Coronavirus without a vaccine and is basically undetectable while fighting Ebola?

The first map is the Ebola coverage in Africa.

The second map is the most current map of infected places around the world. Its not looking good for the African nations that are constantly at war with Ebola.

Okay, honestly not sure whether you are referring to actual Republicans who somewhere complain about this, or if you actually referring to me. So, just to be clear, I'm not a Republican, I'm not even American. I'm a German, and politically speaking, Bernie Sanders is to the right of me.

With that out of the way, back to the issue: Now, some states pushed the primaries back a few months. That is the responsible thing to do. That, or have mail-in elections. Because, seriously, gathering all those people in one place over hours, when all the actual experts are telling people to stay home and only come out if absolutely necessary, that's insane.

OTOH, the people who actually are motivated enough to come out to vote in Democratic primaries likely don't want to derail the process like that. Putting the whole thing off for a few months is likely to hurt their nominee's chances, and they dn't want that.

Thanks. Honestly, I think we're all just being fatalistic about this. If you get it, you get it. Meanwhile, there's a job to do.

The people I feel sorry for are the waitresses, bartenders, etc. I'm getting as many hours as I can stand to work, while they've all been sent home with nothing.

No. Just no.

This is a pandemic. The virus doesn't care about elections and candidates' chances. People are gonna get infected at these primaries. That's not even a question, the way people have to stand in line for hours at them, of course, some of them will get infected. And while they themselves might be willing to risk their lives over this, which is stupid in itself but their choice, they are also risking the lives of people they come in contact with, because that's how viruses work.

And even if this really can't wait a few months, well, push it back two or three weeks in order to organize a postal ballot election. Send the ballots to the registered voters, have them fill it out and send it back.

On no level is the decision to hold the primaries in this situation excusable.

LOL, the first Corona jokes emerge.
yesterday, I met a truck on which someonehad written "I may be slow, but I have 2 million rolls of toilet paper :p"
And some joker posted "now that everyone is at home, what excuse will DHL use to not deliver our parcels?" (DHL is infamous for their staff being too lazy to even ring at peoples' doors and frequently just leaving a note instead that you weren't at home and should collect your parcel at the post office.)
It's nice to see that the German tradition of gallows humour is still alife =)

And on the radio they had a feature yesterday about people hamstering. A psychologist said it's in human nature. A survey showed that different peoples hamster different items. While the Germans hamster toilet paper and pasta, the French (no kidding! It was a serious research!) hamster wine and condomes.
Damned! Now the borders are closed, I find out that I live in the wrong country. :D

This is a public service announcement from your local Trekkie nurse, please everyone stop stealing boxes of face masks from the hospitals. We nurses (and other healthcare workers) need them to perform our jobs safely and to protect our patients. That is all! <3

((No joke this is a real thing. We had to take masks out of all public areas, patient rooms, and unlocked storage closets at our hospital because people were stealing them so now we have a hospital wide shortage before things have even really gotten bad in my state.))

Bunch of savages in this town.

In all seriousness, the way I learned it these past few days, these masks also don't protect the person who wears them, it is for the protection of others. Like you say, doctors and nurses wear them to protect the patients with an ailing immune system from possible germs and bacteria in their own breath.

And that is the real point: Everyone who wants one of these masks to protect themselves, they won't help with that. Everyone who wants to wear them to protect others, right now there's a shortage of these masks and they therefore need to be where they are needed the most, hospitals.

Also, @RocketQueen , thank you and all the other medical professionals and personnel for your service.
