Even in TOS there was at least one episode - "Court Martial" - where EVERYONE on the Starbase (1701 assigned crewmember or not) had the Star Fleet 'Delta' on their uniforms. I don't recall if there were other episodes where this was the case, but it was here.

Thats the one that always stands out for me as it's a very obvious one. I'm sure TOS Defiant originally had the delta (outwith the Enterprise episode), but obscured.

Personally, I'm happy with the retcon/correction. The idea that every ship had it's own patch/logo like that was a really strange one. There was no unified representation of Starfleet within the logo, just loads of potentially odd shapes.

If we can only have one insignia (either patch or badge) then I agree that they should be a single unifed logo, with or without (I prefer with) additional inset detail like the Command Star, Sciences Sphere/Planet, Operations "C" or Medical Cross, I also wouldn't mind seeing a few new ones like the (.)-shaped one that has been seen in some (fake?) pictures of the DSC Delta, or even adding the different Engineering & Science Logos from some of the licensed products, the dish logo seen occassionally for Comms or the test-pilot's "Sigma" from ENT: First Flight for Helm/Nav operators or even Bridge personnel in general.

Additionally, I quite like the idea of shoulder patches to indicate a ship, station, fleet or even HQ Department or Division the wearer is assigned to.

That would make them look even more like actual military uniforms so I'm glad they're not doing that. I quite like the fact that Star Trek uniforms look so... civilian?

Enterprise was a bit different as they went with the modern-world style mission patches instead of a Starfleet logo.

The delta was initially supposed to be for starships with other patches being for different services (Antares was a freighter, so freighters had their own patch etc). The original costume department assuming all ships were to be different was an error or miscommunication.

The delta has been considered the starfleet logo since 1979 - and thats been followed through with the Kelvin and Franklin of the AU movies (both of which would exist in both continuities). Ditching it now would be a huge error - the starfleet delta's the one thing thats tied every show together.

In the Reeves-Stevevens novel Federation, it was said that the delta represents the warp field geometry, with the star or whatever being the ship inside the warp field.

We trek fans would rather die than have plot holes!

Sorry, Reeve-Stevenses, I love a lot of your stuff, but this is just about the worst fan wank there is! Truly awful! :brickwall:

If one absolutely must have an explanation, why can't it just be inspired by NASA's insignia?

In fact, we might say it was inspired by the Roscosmos logo? :p

I suppose Chekov was right, Russia really invented everything, including Starfleet.

Nice try, but that dates from 1992 and is post Star Trek. And it's pretty clearly derived from the NASA "meatball" which is from 1959.
USAF Space Command logos are a better fit.

I'm thinking 1964 somehow came much earlier. :p

Does anybody remember this tweet from Bryan Fuller?

Unless it was a joke or something major has changed in production, these look very different from the uniforms we see in the trailer. I suspect that everything we see in the trailer takes place in the first episode of Discovery, and I think we can expect changes in aesthetic within the first season--if not by the second episode.

That was a joke about those being available as turtlenecks to buy, it wasn't a sneak peak at the uniforms.

I also get a vibe that, not necessarily on this particular point but more generally, the show may have changed quite a bit from what Fuller originally envisaged. I fully admit I don't have a lot to back that up, but it's just a personal interpretation based on the events so far in the production and rumours posted here. I get a gut feeling they almost did a Roddenberry on him, and pushed him out so they could change things. But that's salacious speculation

I'd say the Russian space agency https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipe...s_logo_en.svg/381px-Roscosmos_logo_en.svg.png logo and/or USAF Space Command logos are a better fit.

China National Space Administration

(Apparently both the future UFP and Starfleet blatantly ripped off the CNSA's logo! )
