The problem is not so much sensing death but it's coming. Precognition maybe?
Maybe life impinges on the space-time fabric like gravity, and Saru's people can sense that change in 'pressure' on that fabric in advance?

I'm an old-school European leftie(proudly).
Hearing Americans (and I seriously mean no personal offence) talking about Hollywood "leaning left" is hilarious.;)

Hollywood is only circumstantially located in California; it's entirely controlled by Wall Street.

As for the alien's ability to sense death I wonder if it works anything like that device on the "DS9" ep "RIvals" were it could give you good or bad luck. Not sure how something like that could ever exist even in a universe like Trek.
It's also possible that this reboot will be more open to mystical stuff like this. Might even get a ghost story or a vampire story in the future.

A remarkably perceptive post. This is generally what I meant about "probabilites". The gadget affected probability.

You mean Spock's Vulcan sense from "The Immunity Syndrome"?
"As if millions of Vulcans cried out in terror, and then were suddenly silenced."
In America many are considered radicals. Lol
They're all someone's child.

They stole my idea...I mean...never mind.

Various "likes" and polls. Last time I looked the cbs video was literally 40 to 1 positive. Even the usual target for unhappiness-the official YouTube video--was beyond double ratio in likes: 18k to 8k.

Edit: just checked: cbs video: 46.5k likes/loves to 400 dislikes/hates. Overwhelmingly positive. The two main videos: 64.5k to 8.5k. Huge.

The trailer has over 5. 6 million views between the two main sources.
I have been informed on facebook that the largest facebook group on fb voted on the trailer and only 4% disliked it. I asked for some stats as I'm not part of that group.

We've had loads of ghost stories in Trek, from TNG: "Sub Rosa" to VOY: "The Haunting of Deck 15" and ENT: "Daedalus"
As for Vampires, Krall (although his was all alien suit tech) and TNG: "Man of the People"

I'd be open to more whacky stuff like that in Trek, but hopefully executed a bit better.

The difference is Trek usually likes to give some science or real world explanation for things that are supernatural. I wonder what it would be like if they just did a ghost story and had it be a real dead human being. I wouldn't even mind if they made God or Demons into a real thing. I liked "Barge of the Dead" in part because I like to think Torres was experiencing more than a bad dream.
Also I don't think it should matter if most if not all of that stuff isn't real. Show's like "Twin Peaks", "Supernatural" and even more fluffy stuff like "Hercules" and "Xenia" are good despite the fact that most of that stuff is based in fantasy.

Jason
Supernatural just means "not yet explainable". Trek could easily feature a disembodied dead Human.
