College Football 2023 - RIP Pac-12

Escaped a defensive battle against the Ags. Goodness our passing game is trash, no two ways about it. Thank goodness our running game is great. But honestly, Tennessee has always had such a rich passing and QB tradition (long before Peyton) that I genuinely miss being able to move the ball in the air. Running backs might be the backbone of our conference and even a strong component of our own past but compared to others we have always been a passing team coupled with stout defense. Why we can't manage that this year is anyone's guess. Joe is as talented as anyone but indecisive as hell and he makes stupid decisions when pushed. Our WRs don't help matters. And with that being an issue it makes the entire team feel subpar.

It's ALABAMA HATE WEEK!

USC defensive coordinator Alex Grinch is now former USC defensive coordinator.

Can't believe that didn't happen sooner. They've squandered one of the best QB's and offenses seen in recent memory. It was heartbreaking watching the QB cry on his mother after the game. Riley really screwed the pooch with this.

Darth Saban strikes back

I never expected us to win that game. That said....

Did you know? Tennessee's opponents (including BAMA) haven't been flagged for a live ball penalty in over 3 games? According to SEC officials our opponents have been absolutely perfect. Tennessee has a beastly pass rush but you wouldn't know it because we haven't been able to generate it since we sacked SC and TAMU (and others) a billion times. BAMA and others have been allowed to hold with impunity.

That same Gump team was allowed to get away with targeting LSU's QB and knocking him out of the game and a horse collar earlier. And lest you think it's a one off, in the 2021 season (another Tuscaloosa game) Gumps were allowed to knock out UT QB Hendon Hooker's teeth. You read that right. No flag.

Same shit is happening with UGA. The SEC is protecting teams that they think are supposed to win and/or those that have playoff hopes. Just watch us vs Mizzou (and watch Mizzou getting hosed last week against UGA). We will finally get a favorable whistle this week because us rising in the rankings will help UGA (they play us after we play Mizzou this week) and UGA needs another quality win with their sorry SoS. Then when we play UGA next game the refs will hose us to guarantee UGA's playoff spot. Ole Miss will also get hosed this week against UGA.

It's always been this way to a certain degree but lately it's gotten to the point where a LOT of people are talking, including coaches and talking heads. It will all get written off as sour grapes though.

Riley had the same issue at OU. It just didn't matter in the B12 which has been a shootout conference.

It's going to matter even more when 'SC changes conferences next year. I wonder if Lincoln Riley's days are already numbered. There has to be a bad taste in a lot of mouths as the program once again squanders a chance at greatness in favor of being choke artists.

Hasn't Lincoln Riley only been at USC for two years? Hardly enough time to revamp the defense.

Both Lincoln Riley and Josh Heupel were hired at their respective schools in 2021. I point that out because while our defense was non-existent last year, we've found a defense this year. Both are still working with what they inherited but there's no doubt that USC would have a straight talent advantage on Tennessee, especially given the great portal exodus and scholarship reductions. I think the difference is that Heupel knew he had to have a defense just to survive in the SEC (he'd already seen that from his time as an OC at Mizzou) and he went out and hired one of the best DL coaches in college ball in Rodney Garner as well as Tim Banks who'd been co-DC at Penn State.

Alex Grinch is from Riley (and Heupel's) Oklahoma days. Alex Grinch couldn't stop Butch Jones from taking him to the wire twice at Tennessee and once at Cinci. And one of those games Grinch's team had Baker Mayfield as QB.

Jim Harbaugh suspended for the rest of the season.

Can he just jump to the NFL next year to avoid college sanctions?

Fuck Jim Harbaugh.

Motherfucker helped South Carolina beat us to keep us out of the playoffs. With a team that's been down for as long as we'd been down to have a special season like we were having and now know that opportunity was stolen from us is infuriating. There needs to be more than just game day suspension. Michigan is talking about irreparable harm - how bout the irreparable harm done to us and other teams both in and out of the B1G?

This Husky was a little too slick. Washington got a safety a minute later, but the dude was still celebrating until one of his coaches said "you idiot!"
