Collars bad...

Just to reiterate, I think the collars are fine, I just hated the two piece design that only the men wore after the first 6 episodes of season 3. There were actually 4 versions of the TNG season 3-7 uniform. The first version is a two piece wool form fitting variation with 2 seams that ran down the chest. This version would have remained but because wool doesn't stretch well, they had to come up with a looser variation with a spandex band around the mid section. This version didn't have the two chest seams. The producers wouldn't put the women in such a bulky outfit so the costume designer designed a spandex version for Dr. Crusher, and the female extras. The spandex version had two variations; front zipper, no front zipper.

Here is an image from Booby Trap. Data and Worf wear the original third season uniform, Picard wears the looser variation.

The collars made the uniforms look more formal but the two piece design made the male actors look overweight, and having to constantly tug downward to unwrinkle them was an obvious design flaw.
Agreed. The one piece suits had a sleekness about them, almost an elegance, that the two piecers didn't. And the "stand up and tug down the shirt" move is silly.

^The Captain's jacket was a starfleet fashion lowpoint! Most of Bob Blackman's work was a miss unfortunately. His work on DS9 and Enterprise was better.

Actually prefer the no collars for the Next Gen Uniform, but prefer the DS9/VOY or F:C Uniforms to the Next Gen ones. which I suppose which both had a collar but also didn't!

This, pajamas that had shrunk in too hot water when washed.
But, it was the 80s..
It wasn't the 80's; it was trying to imagine the distant future. If we're around in 400 years, we won't be wearing cotton and wool, and our uniforms will probably be nano-engineered machines that might be very form fitting to our well genetically enhanced bodies.
Collared by far over the uncollared. I liked the FC/late DS9 the best.
I always thought they looked closer to something out of a parallel dystopian future than Star Trek's.
Any particular reason why a uniform like this would leave the chest uncovered on the sides? :wtf:
The same one that had women in miniskirts in TOS or Kira in a nighty by Season 7?

Kira in a nighty by Season 7?

If you're thinking of the one I think you are, that gets a free pass because it was to accommodate Nana Visitor's pregnancy. Especially because it was in-universe - not only was Nana pregnant, the character she PLAYED was.

As for the miniskirts: First, it was common fashion of the 60's. Second, at least it's normal. Sometimes women (I say women because, IMHO, guys look silly in the skant) might feel like showing their legs. Fine, I get it. But there is literally no reason to build an otherwise normal Starfleet uniform but leaving the sides of the chest exposed. It'd be like a short-sleeved suit. It's meaningless.

I think Picard and Data both here are in two-peices while Worf alone is in the intermediate one-piece.
^By The Price, the men are in bulky wool jackets and the women are in spandex.

Is that spandex, specifically? They're in form-fitting one-pieces, but they're not the shiny material of the first season.

^ I had assumed that spandex had to be shiny and tight. That's why none of those unis are spandex.

Seven of Nine's silver/gray uniform was spandex, but those aren't.

I don't mean the skirt she wore of the pregnancy, but as early as, what, Season 2(?) she was in a one-piece instead of her original two, that EVERY OTHER BAJORAN wore. It's just a Trek thing to create variants to show off the ladies' goods.

Also on Bajoran uniforms, I wonder if Odo's first season uniform didn't include a collar or belt to suggest that he couldn't mimic clothes perfectly either (like he couldn't faces), but then the costume department put all Bajoran security officers in the same thing. Maybe because they were using René Auberjonois' costumes. It's strange because the blue and red uniforms all have both belt and collar. After all, the collar is where the rank insignia go, so all those Bajorans in yellow were tankless.

Re TOS, it was common fashion in the 60's, but it wasn't common military garb. And it wasn't just the 60's. T'Pol, Seven, Troi, and many others all had dubious costumes. We give it a pass because it's just television and there are more important things to talk about (starships!), but come on. Also, the sides were covered in the UNUSED image above, just with transparent material. Which, for all we know, is transparent kevlar.

Or maybe Nana just didn't like the normal Bajoran uniform? She could have put someone's eye out with those shoulder pads.

Seriously. Look at Kira's uniform in the pilot episode, and look at the uniform she wore after that. Can you honestly say you preferred the former?

As for an in-universe reason why she wears it: As the highest ranking Bajoran on the station, I'm sure she can wear whatever uniform she wants.

The Kira outfit I think we are talking about started in season 4 but for some reason not until after "Way of the Warrior" for some reason. I do think it was something Berman proably did in order to improve ratings and was forced on them. I think they also gave her a haircut that wasn't so military looking I believe that year as well. At least it was better than the short period of time on "Stargate" were they tried to doll of Carter. It was the same year they tried to make Vaneesa Angel's character a thing and also Tea=c got that strange goatee.
