I hate the first season uniforms. Who would wear those in any organization. They really do look like pajamas.
It's really disturbing to me to think that Gene ever seriously considered this design.
Agreed. The one piece suits had a sleekness about them, almost an elegance, that the two piecers didn't. And the "stand up and tug down the shirt" move is silly. The collars made the uniforms look more formal but the two piece design made the male actors look overweight, and having to constantly tug downward to unwrinkle them was an obvious design flaw.
^By The Price, the men are in bulky jackets and the women are in spandex.

I also disliked when they gave Picard that jacket. What was that about?
It wasn't the 80's; it was trying to imagine the distant future. If we're around in 400 years, we won't be wearing cotton and wool, and our uniforms will probably be nano-engineered machines that might be very form fitting to our well genetically enhanced bodies. This, pajamas that had shrunk in too hot water when washed.
But, it was the 80s..
I always thought they looked closer to something out of a parallel dystopian future than Star Trek's.Collared by far over the uncollared. I liked the FC/late DS9 the best.
The same one that had women in miniskirts in TOS or Kira in a nighty by Season 7?Any particular reason why a uniform like this would leave the chest uncovered on the sides?![]()
Kira in a nighty by Season 7?
I think Picard and Data both here are in two-peices while Worf alone is in the intermediate one-piece.Just to reiterate, I think the collars are fine, I just hated the two piece design that only the men wore after the first 6 episodes of season 3. There were actually 4 versions of the TNG season 3-7 uniform. The first version is a two piece wool form fitting variation with 2 seams that ran down the chest. This version would have remained but because wool doesn't stretch well, they had to come up with a looser variation with a spandex band around the mid section. This version didn't have the two chest seams. The producers wouldn't put the women in such a bulky outfit so the costume designer designed a spandex version for Dr. Crusher, and the female extras. The spandex version had two variations; front zipper, no front zipper.
Here is an image from Booby Trap. Data and Worf wear the original third season uniform, Picard wears the looser variation.

Is that spandex, specifically? They're in form-fitting one-pieces, but they're not the shiny material of the first season.^By The Price, the men are in bulky wool jackets and the women are in spandex.

If you're thinking of the one I think you are, that gets a free pass because it was to accommodate Nana Visitor's pregnancy. Especially because it was in-universe - not only was Nana pregnant, the character she PLAYED was.
As for the miniskirts: First, it was common fashion of the 60's. Second, at least it's normal. Sometimes women (I say women because I hate the skant) might feel like showing their legs. Fine, I get it. But there is literally no reason to build an otherwise normal Starfleet uniform but leaving the sides of the chest exposed. That has no function whatsoever.
I don't mean the skirt she wore of the pregnancy, but as early as, what, Season 2(?) she was in a one-piece instead of her original two, that EVERY OTHER BAJORAN wore. It's just a Trek thing to create variants to show off the ladies' goods.
I also disliked when they gave Picard that jacket. What was that about?
