Christmas Thread

People who don't want an imaginary deer to "suffer" from Christmas abuse? Or angry vegans who don't like it that other people eat deer meat?

What is this horseshit that I hear about people wanting to ban "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"?

It's just some complaints on social media. It's not going to be banned.

I don't think it should be banned either, but the movie totally has a messed up message. According to the movie, it's okay to bully, discriminate against, and exile someone just for looking or being different, and those people are only worthy of respect and fair treatment if the thing that makes them different suddenly becomes of value to you.

And unlike the song, where it's confined to just the other reindeer, Santa is the worst one of all.

Finally have the tree dry and up. But had to wait on the lights they didn't work, several strands. Now it is up no decorations. Still working on baking and wrapping gifts. Have so many things to do. Plus I am sick! I am hanging in there so far! This is really behind for me. :(

This is a really stressful time of year, with so much to do, and usually not enough time available to do it in. Hopefully you will be feeling better soon!

I think health is more important than decorations IMO --- just don't exhaust yourself with no sleep --- if things don't happen and are not done that is that .. I usually think mmmmm "so what" it was not necessary to happen and we made it thru anyway --- take care of yourself.

I don’t think I’ve actually seen it, but don’t they realize at the end they were wrong to leave him out or is it implied if he lost his useful nose they would kick him out again?

The Christmas commercials, at least the ones that are coming up on Hulu, are historically bad this year. There's at least five different ones that frequently come up that I have to mute to protect my sanity.

1. "On the twelfth day of springtime this is what I see..." The commercial starts out with a dead eyed girl signing 12 Days of Christmas about people transfixed by social media. Then it says "Let's get real" and a dead eyed family sings about people spending time together instead. It's one in a trend of "Sanctimoniously anti-social media" ads (Like the Miller Lite one), as if they are the first one to say anything about people spending too much time alone on their phones. But in addition to that, this one is creepy, deadeyed and disturbing.

2. The Muppet ones.

3. An Old Navy commercial where Neil Patrick Harris is hosting some kitschy daytime talk show and some people come out of the audience to rap about wrapping presents. Old Navy has a history of ads so cringingly bad they assault your sanity like the old Christmas Special ones or the Hamster Dad ones. One more resounding success in that area.

Streaming services badly need a way to blacklist specific ads. At least I'm not seeing cartoon bears rap about how well they wiped anymore.

finally getting things done. Last of baking today. Doing the candy tomorrow. Have all gifts wrapped. I am wondering if it is okay to ask here, what is your favorite Christmas song? and treat?

One of my favorite Xmas treats is our family's candied walnuts. It's one of those foods where you take a bite and think, "Hmph. It's OK," and the next thing you know, you've eaten the entire batch. My husband calls it "Christmas Crack," because no one can stop eating it. He has even taken over the duty of making it every year. My family also has a great Christmas dinner, with standing rib roast and Yorkshire pudding. Our Yorkshire pudding is the most unhealthy food on the planet, but damn is it good!

For Christmas songs, my husband and I really love Trans-Siberian Orchestra, so we listen to that all Christmas. I also really like Annie Lennox's version of "Winter Wonderland," Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song," James Taylor's "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and Tim Minchin's "White Wine in the Sun." I posted those earlier in the thread.
