Chakotay vs Riker

Vulagr

Commander
So i'm introducing a friend of mine to Voyager because she's never seen it before.

Then it occurred to me for the first time that Chakotay never questioned Janeway's going down to the surface like Riker would have.

And up until now I'd always thought it was a First officer's job to prevent the Captain from leading the away team because he was too valuable.

So, maybe Riker was just lying because he wanted to hog all the action for himself and he used a lie to put the onus on the Captain?

Picard was well into his 60s. What was a dangerous mission for the Frenchie was piss easy for a woman in her 50s like Janeway,

I would guess that in Voyager, most away missions would be situations of first contact. That protocol would normally fall to the captain, although I know chakotay did have a special interest in FCC.

Chakotay tried to stand up to Janeway in "Equinox" - and she sent him to his room!

If Janeway wanted to beam down, Chak couldn't stop her any more than Naomi could have stopped Nero from destroying Vulcan. He's just.... kind of inert.

Came in here thinking of them getting into a fistfight, and thought of Janeway sending Chak to his room in front of Riker.

Yup.

yeah, Janeway was kind of dictatorial, she preferred Chak to be a yes-man and got pissy when he wasn't.

I HATED that scene where Riker first TOLD Picard he couldn't go on the away mission. Kirk would have never stood for that, and neither would Janeway.

And that's the difference.

Kirk Headed a ship of 400 (?).

Picard headed a ship of over a 1000.

Janeway had less than 150.

Her "bench" simply wasn't deep enough not to play the star all the time.

Oh, and (using the actor's real ages) Janeway was in her late 30's, at the start of Voyager.

Picard was late 40's at the start of TNG.

I think Chakotay led most of the away missions. A glaring exception is in Unimatrix Zero, but that was Janeway's baby from the get-go. As others have stated, this is a different ship in a very unusual circumstance. Many of the rules were pretty "fluid.'

I don't recall Janeway or Chakotay going on very many away missions, they sent The Doctor most of the time, and if not him then Paris and Kim or even Seven. Janeway hardly ever left the bridge except when it was absolutely necessary, or to go to sickbay. It's also surprising how little Chakotay did in that area in the later episodes as well.

Janeway adjusted her plans in "Unimatrix Zero" when Chakotay confronted her about going to the Borg cube alone. We didn't always see them interact when making plans. How do we know what they discussed off screen? I prefer to think that they had pretty healthy exchanges as they discussed plans and options for whatever they decided to do.

Janeway's one principle, though, as revealed in "Shattered" was to plan things out pretty completely:

CHAKOTAY: I suggest we take a page from your rule book. We try diplomacy.
JANEWAY: Fine, but the next page in that book says that when diplomacy fails, we need a backup plan.

Aunty Kate, did you mean "healthy excahnges" to sound like you were actrually struggling not to say "Hot wet Nighbour annoyingly loud sex"?

I mean seriously, it's not like you can bang on the wall or whack your ceiling with a broom, and scream "Hey Kathy! Boff quieter or I'm calling security!"

However, "one law for all" y'know?

How many noise control complaints could Janeway have on her permanent record before she loses her command?
