Chakotay/Seven - the pairing that came out of nowhere.

I think it'd be fine if not for the fact the show had done Picard/Crusher levels of foreshadowing that Chakotay was holding a torch for Janeway.

Mulgrew was adamant that she didn't want to be "sexed up" in any way - including having a romance with anyone else on the main cast. Which is a shame, because I think they did have chemistry in the early seasons, and I think it would have added a lot of depth to the show if they had to navigate how to have a chain of command while also having feelings for one another.

Interestingly, later on in the show she did want some romance for the character. Like you said, not with a subordinate, though.

It seems to me that it wasn't because Janeway flirted quite heavily with Chakotay and vice versa in first seasons that she had true love feelings with him. Besides, after she got her break-up letter from her fiancé in Hunters, she had the free way to move up a gear
and all the more so as Chakotay, him, impatiently waited a smile, a word, a gesture. But no, in fact, she was still a little more distant from him as if she absolutely did not want to take the plunge and I'm pretty sure that her will to face her responsabilities as the higher ranked officer of the vessel and to reach her goal to make the return trip weren't the only reasons.

Probably bc Jeri Taylor left.

A future that didn't happen, no?

True as seing as Adm. Janeway erased this future.

That being said, it is not because the Doctor showed a big attraction toward Seven through the years that this feeling was shared. Besides, she never showed such a feeling in the past so why now?
They liked and respected each other - and still do - as a mentor and a young lady who had still everything to learn and I'm sure that they will be on the same page in Picard.

And if there had to be absolutely love between Seven and someone else, I would have seen her more as Janeway's other half than the Doctor.... :techman:.They shared an incredible chemistry: tense but respectful and then, there was this something else that we can't define but it was right there. No surprise that there are so much fanfictions about Janeway/Seven on the web.

Seven walked a tightrope for four years (Janeway had tossed her Borg shipmates out an airlock in "Scorpion" -- stubborn Seven held on for dear life. Had Janeway had her way, Seven would've gone out the airlock with them.)

Euh sorry but it was Chakotay who wanted to throw her out the airlock (and besides he did it with some of her Borg companions -> she just managed to cling a little more to the walls, while Janeway was in coma). The only thing Janeway really did against Seven was to cut off the link she had with her Collective. Afterwards, she took Seven under her protective/watchful wings (Chakotay used to say that like Tom, Seven was her personal project.) and tried to teach Humanity to her impetuous student, with the help of the Doctor. And according to all the time Seven spent with Janeway through their philosophical conversations after the working days, yes, they could have become a couple. But Janeway was closed to an eventual relationship with a subordinate, even as brilliant as Seven AND the Doctor only taught her heterosexual relationships when it was about dating... even if Seven could have found out herself that all sort of couples were acceptable if she had done some research in the ship's database.

Absolutely. I agree 100%. And the fact that both actresses were still able to pull this off despite not liking each other at the time is remarkable actually. Surely a testament to both of their acting prowess(es).

I got the sudden inspiration to write a parody of Jolene sung by Chakotay.

Jean Luc, Jean Luc, Jean Luc, Jean Luc! Please don’t take her just because you can!

You can have your choice of girls but she is my entire world my happiness depends on you Jean Luc!

She talks about you as of late whenever she regenerates and I can not compete with you Jean Luc!

And Seven will be telling both of them, "You Don't Own Me". ;)
