I didn’t like DSC when it first came out, but upon the second viewing, it’s grown on me. At least it makes sense, unlike PIC which makes no sense whatsoever and was just a vehicle for Stewart and Spiner like all four TNG films were.
PIC S1 made more sense than DIS S1.

There seems to be mixed feelings on Star Trek's return via CBS All Access. How about a poll? If yes, which show or shows are you enjoying? If no, please express your frustrations.

You started the same thread, with the same title, less than 2 months ago.

I merged them.

In this new era, I find that I unexpectedly like Lower Decks best of all, because it feels like a Star Trek show to me. It feels coherent with what came before in a way that DSC, with it's redesign of pretty much everything just doesn't. Same reason why I like The Mandalorian, because it fits in nicely with the established universe. I find that DSC requires a massive suspension of disbelief to make things work, what with the spore drive, the red angel suit et.al and I wish they'd hire and actually listen to a Scientific Consultant.

I was properly looking forward to Picard, but the whole thing felt naff to me. From the awful makeup / CG de-aging of Brent Spiner, to the whole concept of cloning Data from a single positron. And then there were the magic plot devices, from being able to see into the past to thinking a tool into existence that once again forces the viewer to suspend their disbelief. Having said that, there were some good moments, and I particularly enjoyed Nepenthe.

I don't think we've had a classic episode from DSC, Picard or even Lower Decks yet. For me, DSC's 'New Eden' would come the closest.

Any premise with deck-by-deck artificial gravity requires suspending a wee bit of disbelief. And transporters. Maybe even warp. Just sayin'.

I don't think I weighed in since PIC finished. Could be wrong. I was disappointed, b/c I thought it was gonna be more wordsy, more a drama, than action-drama, more new Golden Age TV writing. The trouble with having expectations.

Watched Lower Decks, two eps, nails on a chalkboard.

Looking forward to DSC, a year with hopefully no major course change in the writers' room, and not so beholden to tying into previous things. Wish they hadn't tried being a prequel from the beginning!

I disagree about the lack of classics. ‘If Memory Serves’ is an out and out classic in my book, beautifully written and acted, a successful sequel to an episode from some 55 years previously, which actually adds to it in a beautiful and fulfilling way.

This is mostly due to seasons consisting of only 10-15 epsiodes combined with serial storytelling. Stand alones aren't really going to be a thing unless the show shifts toward an episodic approach. I think Strange New Worlds is going to take a more episodic approach.

I'd add "Calypso" and "Remembrance" to the list of Modern Classics.

"Context Is for Kings" and "Into the Forest I Go" are bubbling just underneath.

"Crisis Point" from Lower Decks is something I'll watch with the movies from now on. Without spoiling anything about it, it's a perfect spoof of the Star Trek Movies. All of them.

You... know that Paul Stamets was actually named after Paul Stamets the scientist who wrote papers about Earth's mycelial network, right?

I mean sure, it doesn't and probably can't exist, but... the same is true about how the Star Trek version of warp drive is currently described.

Look out for...

Unification III

I remember really liking this one, watched it a couple of times. But now? I could barely tell you what the episode was about. I think that is one of my issues, nothing really sticks as special in the CBS live-action shows. Nothing makes me go "god, I can't wait to rewatch this", outside of Lower Decks, which I plan to do a complete rewatch of here soon.

Star Trek does have a science consultant now (or at least a new one), Dr. Erin Macdonald. She came on with Discovery Season 3, but she looks at the scripts from all the shows. Not LD season 1 though, didn't join soon enough.

She has a PhD in Astrophysics. And a giant Star Trek fan (and Sci-fi in general), she has tattoos of Star Trek stuff.

She's currently on the Star Trek Online weekly stream

I take your point. Both are rather fanciful Sci Fi conceits. I'd argue that warp drive as a concept is more plausible when compared to....... a discrete subspace domain that contains fungal roots in an intergalactic ecosystem with an infinite number of 'roads' that lead everywhere - allowing for instantaneous travel. Initially at least, there's a giant tardigrade that they need to access the network. Incredibly, it seems that via horizontal gene transfer (HGT), the tardigrade can 'borrow' the DNA from the spores to access the network and travel where it wants. Even though tardigrades on earth can't do HGT, even if they could, how would this allow them to access the fungal network is unclear.

I also struggle with roller coaster turbo-lifts, the red angel suit, time-crystals et.al Maybe if DSC weren't 'Star Trek', then I'd have an easier time with it.
