Castle season 8 discussion thread - spoilers

^ Exactly. Firing your female lead, thereby ending "Caskett" forever, doesn't bode well at all for a season 9. People are just going to stop watching entirely. The ratings are on the bubble right now. They'll tank after this.

Seeing as how difficult and down to the wire it took to sign Stana for season 8, it seemed she didn't want to continue with the show. Like someone stated before, shocked ABC fired her since we figured she would have quit instead. We don't know what is really happening behind the scenes but there are alot of rumours and such. Whether true or not, it does not matter anymore. What's done is done.

As a business, you find ways to reduce costs and repackage a product. Is this a gamble? sure. ABC still has alot invested in the show. Are they going to milk every cent? They sure are. Sets aren't cheap. Starting a new show isn't cheap. They have alot of faith in Nathan. Nathan is a very charismatic and likeable guy. Fans go nuts for him.

At least with this move the production/writing staff can focus on Castle and you never know -- it might actually be good OR end up garbage. Show biz!!

Has she strictly speaking been fired? Surely she's just not being offered a new contract which isn't quite the same thing, and I guess given how reluctantly she signed on for S8 maybe they figured she wouldn't sign?

I've heard a few things over the years to suggest they don't get on, as charismatic as he is I can imagine Fillion's personality might be a little wearying day in day out, but others in the cast quite clearly have a lot of time for him so maybe the issue is Stana? Or maybe its both of them and just an unavoidable personality clash. Whatever it is it's become obvious for a few years that the writers are using any excuse they can not to have the characters in the same room together!

Dropping down to 13 episodes would seem to be indicative of them winding the show down but I wonder if there is the possibility of additional seasons if the show picks up?

Saw the episode with Espo's former fiancée last night which was quite good. I've said it for years but I'd quite happily watch an Espo and Ryan Starskey & Hutch style spin off!

Two reasons why they would do 13 instead of 22+...

1. They want to give the creators time to come up with a new show with the same name and it would come out at mid-season.

2. They want to do 13 to see if it bomb, which I think it will if this season is any hint, but if it doesn't they will get a back 9. It's what they did for Scandal season 2 and that worked out well.

This episode is the final nail. I've reached the point where I don't even know why I'm watching Castle.

You know the writers aren't even putting in any effort when they make the murderer say...

"Why the hell won't you die?!"

This is an episode about superheroes so in the least, put in a line that a supervillain would say rather than this generic line.

Yeah, every time I think "Well, it can't get worse than this." They manage to surprise me; that one has to be the dumbest episode in the history of police procedurals.

Rather than get mad at what a trainwreck the show has become, I've just decided to conclude that they really do exist in a world with supernatural powers, mythical beings, time travel, and now immortals, and roll with it until the bitter end.

I mean, they didn't even try and offer an alternate semi-plausible explanation in this one like they usually do. I figured with the first two "deaths" that they would eventually reveal that the guy was doing this to himself to gain notoriety (because he was bored with his life) and was using some kind of toxin that temporarily slows your heartbeat to almost undetectable levels, making you appear to be dead. I doubt such a thing would fool a real life medical examiner who was as competent as Lanie is supposed to be, but it works in TV and movie land and is plausible enough for audiences to buy as an explanation.

I'm in the mindset that everything that happened after Castle's car crash is a dream. They can kill Beckett and then have the show continue for a few more episodes, or seasons. The last scene of the show have Castle wake up and go "I just had the oddest dream" and Beckett rolls over with a HUGE stomach and go "Get sleep now because soon you will have three babies waking you up".

Or in the likely event that they can't get her back, have Castle wake up on Serenity and go "What did I eat last night?!"

I stopped watched it regularly in the last few seasons and despite really liking Beckett I would check out how it is without her. I don't have high hopes, but such a major change has got me interested in seeing how it turns out.

I tried to watch Mondays episode and didn't even make it past Castle trying to get her to move to some foreign place. The show just didn't seem castle, if you know what I mean. But I haven't watched the show since the car crash.

Dumber than the genie one?

I never saw the entire genie episode, I fell asleep about 30 minutes into it and my wife hit record on the DVR so I could watch it later but I haven't had the desire to bother with it. I may have to check it out just out of morbid curiosity.

Ryan being the cliche overbearing parent was... cliche.

At least nobody at the murder scene said the pen is mightier than the sword.

Nice to see Jewel, but like when Summer Glau guested, it was a practically a pointless cameo.

I'm tellin' ya, the best Firefly guest star would be Ron Glass, reprising his role as Detective Harris of the old 12th precinct from the 1970s to help with an old cold case. Harris was also an author, so he and Castle can kibbutz about writing during the case. It'd be epic.

Saw the Haley centred one last night. Since when she become so beloved by everyone at the 12th? As usual the show's depiction of the UK/British characters was pretty cringe worthy.

I wonder if there'll be a Castle/Haley subplot in S9? :(

I'm still holding out hope there won't be a season 9!

The creators of LOST once commented on the fact that there was a campaign to save the show before it even premiered. They said "Why aren't there even campaigns to cancel shows? I'd like to start one for 7th heaven!"

I feel we should do that for Castle.

The rumor is that ABC will renew Castle today for a finale season of 13 episodes today. Honestly, what the fuck is the point of killing off (I'm assuming) the co-star of show just to end it 13 episodes later?! Just have Beckett be a recurring. She can be in 2-3 episodes in season 9 as she runs for Senate. End with her winning and having a baby.
