Castle season 8 discussion thread - spoilers

Yeah. I don't know a lot about the historical comings and goings of TV Hollywood, but this seems pretty unprecedented. Like you say, they'd either just kill the show or keep Katic around for a couple.

ABC must be desperate to fill time slots. I guess they've finally realized Marvel is running out of steam and Rhimes isn't the wonder hack they thought she was.

ABC did something similar to Scrubs, but I think the actors left and ABC continued it as almost a spinoff.

I can't think of a show that fired it's female lead and then announced the next month that the show will have a final shorten season. It's very odd to me. But I think it's because her and what's his name (Castle) must REALLY hate each other. Normally when you work together so long you stick together with your co-stars.

And Rhimes is still a hack. ;)
(I say this as someone who lovers How to get away with murder.)

There is no point. ABC must be making some sort of money on it, that's the only reason to keep the show going for business reasons. That or one of the higher-ups has a soft-spot for it.

I think Nathan and Stana liked each other fine for awhile, and then something changed 2 seasons ago. Whatever it was, something changed their working relationship to the point that it became untenable. It's a shame, because they tested dozens of Becketts and picked her BECAUSE of the unique chemistry they had.

ABC should've never let it get this far, though. It's just gotten ugly and sad at this point. It's not as if Castle was a ratings juggernaut and an essentially bulletproof show.

I'd heard that the chemistry may have been the problem and that things got a trifle dicey any time one of them was single and the other wasn't because they were obviously attracted to one another. No idea how much truth there is in that of course, but didn't something similar happen with Shepherd and Willis in Moonlighting, and Duchovney and Anderson also (though maybe to a lesser degree seeing they seem to be really good friends these days)

Duchovny and Anderson just didn't get along...at least that's what they implied in recent interviews that they did while the X-Files relaunch was airing. There were traits that they found irritating in one another. They're older now though, and have become friends and can look back on those days and laugh.

I'm not privy to all the rumors that come out of the Castle camp, since I stopped watching the show regularly 2 seasons ago. But I know that it wasn't always like this between Nathan and Stana. They were once friends at least...and then something really did change sometime prior to season 7. The shippers noticed that their kissing and lovey dovey scenes decreased, and speculated accordingly.

I imagine that it can be difficult working together with someone for 14-18 hours a day sometimes, and maybe there was some truth to reports of Nathan acting like a diva. Then maybe Stana just went "I'm over this," and that's why there was that contract drama last year, on her part as well as his. And once someone puts a stipulation in his contract that he only wants to work with his co-lead, onscreen wife 2 days a week.....dang. Things must've been realllly icy at that point.

Well didn't the show creator leave two seasons ago after the stupid car crash and kidnapping? It's also the writing is REALLY bad!

But after awhile you just get sick of seeing the same people 16+ hours a day for years and years and maybe they grew apart. Who knows what happened, but you can't let it wreck the show, you move on from it. I'd have Beckett run for senate this year so she could be in less episodes. Castle could get a new female partner that makes Beckett jealous, that's always good TV. Then by the end of the season have her win miss a ton of episodes or have her lose and go back to work.

There were so many storylines they could have done with the Beckett not being in every episode this season and with Castle missing years back (like having it be his dad), but they keep doing stupid crap because the writing is so bad.

I'm hoping that Beckett goes into hiding for next season, that's the best I can think of, but I was also hoping they would have her be recurring instead of out right firing the actress.

Yep. They both matured and grew up. It's pretty cool to see how far they've come.

That very well could be. And it's sad to see.

Just seen the one with the guy who won't die...

WTF? They didn't even try to hand-wave some logical solution for how come he'd survived three times? (I imagined the pills he was popping would have counteracted the poison, and the bullet could have ricocheted off the skull, no idea about the electrocution. Ok they're all weak explanations but better than NO explanations?!)

The show used to walk the fantastical line much better.

Frankly sod killing Beckett they might as well have her abducted by aliens.

Can't say I'm shocked. Katic and Jones getting the boot combined with the show's drop in quality...

I was definitely rooting for cancelation because Castle without Beckett doesn't seem exciting and entertaining all. I'm sorry the crew is out of work but most if not all should find jobs quickly. Good thing they filmed two endings so now they have a series ender.

I was too. Definitely. Don't envy the position that they're in.

I find it insanely bizarre they would publicly fire the females, then spend the last week signing all the male leads just to cancel the show.

Not that I'm complaining, but why go through all that mess?

Who knows? Maybe they saw that there were enough fans and/or people who weren't interested in seeing things go forward. That's my best guess.

It's two different companies making separate decisions. The Production Company, Beacon Entertainment(?), still wants to produce another season of Castle. They're also the ones who fired Katic and Jones. The Distribution Company, ABC, is the one who cancelled the show.
