It reminds me of Sisko's three romantic interests (Jennifer, Fenna, Kasidy) all being brown-skinned women, and how some people complained that that meant Sisko was racist for not dating outside his race, while others argued that he has the right to date whoever the hell is attracted to (with all attendant disclaimers about race not even being an issue in the in-universe 24th century even while it clearly still is in the real-world 21st, and race being an artificial construct anyway).
I believe it was actually due to Avery Brook's insistence that he only be paired with black women romantically. The reason was that he wanted to depicted black men and women engaging in healthy positive relationships as role models, and break down stereotypes. Brooks also had issues with Sisko's fate in WYLB for similar reasons.
For what it's worth Kasidy Yates is just described as an 'attractive human woman' in the script for the first episode she appears in. There no specification of her skin colour.
