Judging from his name, Emanuel Tagore is supposed to be South Asian; Ford probably named him in honor of the great Bengali writer/philosopher/reformer Rabindranath Tagore (or Thakur). I think Ben Kingsley might be a good choice for the role; the character does remind me somewhat of Gandhi.
I believe it was actually due to Avery Brook's insistence that he only be paired with black women romantically. The reason was that he wanted to depicted black men and women engaging in healthy positive relationships as role models, and break down stereotypes. Brooks also had issues with Sisko's fate in WYLB for similar reasons. For what it's worth Kasidy Yates is just described as an 'attractive human woman' in the script for the first episode she appears in. There no specification of her skin colour.
I've just started (re)reading Final Frontier, by Diane Carey, and without really thinking about it, I'm picturing Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk (just as in Star Trek [2009]). I was trying to imagine which 40-something British man could play Robert April, and something in his manner of speech put me in mind of Chiwetel Ejiofor in his role of The Operative in Serenity, so now I have my April. Claudia Black is the Romulan commander, Idrys, and Eddie Redmayne (mainly as a less bonkers Balem Abraxas from Jupiter Ascending) has just popped into my head as t'Cael Kilyle. That's all I have for now, but I'm hoping more actors will suggest themselves for the other characters as I continue reading.
I'm sure this is in the thread somewhere, but who do you cast in the New Frontier series? I just started it about a month ago in my chronological journey through the LitVerse. I've been bouncing through some TNG / Double Helix / New Frontier novels in the 2370s. Obviously Shelby, Leflar, Selar and other characters are cast through episodes, but i'm still trying to figure out Captain Calhoun. I've used the novel artwork for some inspiration, but I'm also trying to go off personality. So far my brain goes to (based on the art) - James Purefoy (younger), Joe Flanigan, Thomas Jane. I do agree with some of the fan posts about Esai Morales or a young Edward James Olmos type. Who are some of your New Frontier cast?
Back when NF first began, I usually ended up picturing Calhoun as looking and sounding like Bruce Boxlietner. I wasn't a B5 fan in those days, but I'd usually end up seeing the last couple of minutes of the B5 episodes that aired right before DS9 every Saturday, so the image and voice carried over for me.
I do't see that at all. I put together casts lists for a bunch of the book series a while back, but I just checked and I apparently never did an NF one or at least never saved I'd to my cloud, and I don't have my computer anymore, so I can't check if it's on there.
She is/was a recurring Vulcan/human character in the TNG books, most noted for being extremely lively and irreverent.
I can sort of see that, if she were in her early "Skye the hacker" mode rather than the "hardened SHIELD agent" mode that's how I default to thinking of her now.
Joe Flanigan As for Quintin Stone (from "A Rock and a Hard Place"), the Calhoun-in-all-but-name: Somehow I can't get Michael Ironside out of my head for that one.
I always envisioned Quintin Stone as Stephen McHattie, whom I knew then as the big bad in season 3 of the Ron Perlman Beauty and the Beast.
So this idea recently jumped to mind after seeing season two of The Mandalorian. How about Temuera Morrison as Taran'atar?
