Captain Marvel (2019)

Carol hasn't been binary in 15 years.

Kurt was showing her Binary powers fizzel out, as he was having Carol accept that she was an alcoholic with a problem.

You don't think that they are connected?

Binary is booze powered.

No drinky, no blasty.
She can still access Binary level powers, just not as easily as she could when she first got those powers.

I posted a link to the primary source, upthread.
Her exact quote:
About a year ago, I started paying attention to what my press days looked like and the critics reviewing movies, and noticed
it appeared to be overwhelmingly white male. So, I spoke to
Dr Stacy Smith at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, who put together a study to confirm that. Moving forward, I decided to make sure my press days were more inclusive. After speaking with you, the film critic Valerie Complex and a few other women of colour, it sounded like across the board they weren’t getting the same opportunities as others. When I talked to the facilities that weren’t providing it, they all had different excuses.
Not much to be offended about. Then again some people don't need much to get offended.

Nuh-huh.

It was like a body swap situation.

Like a werewolf, If she doesn't look like Binary, with her head on fire, she has very-very little to do with being like Binary.

That's how it was explained where Carol was lying about losing her Binary super powers to the Avengers, when they thought they were going into battles where "Warbird" could level up, and save the day, but she couldn't.

Or, more broadly: there was low demand for a recast origin story of Han Solo starring a comparative nobody and released six months after the mainline episode.
Bingo! It's too bad too because IMO Solo wasn't that bad a movie. It was just bad timing plus releasing it in the summer means they're up against superhero flicks ie: competing with themselves.

How the frack is that offensive?

Look, if people are supposed to be so sensitive to feelings apologize when others are offended, then apologize across the board. We shouldn't separate groups into those who do or don't have a right to feel offended. Just tired of the double-standards and the selective outrage. One immediately cedes the moral high-ground with double-standards and the net result of that approach is nobody will bother to apologize...since there's no fairness to be had one way or the other.

There's a famous line in Dumbo where the two clowns are in silhouette and one of them says he'll hurt the feelings of Dumbo and the other one says "nah, they don't have feelings. They're made of rubber". That's kind of how straight white men are made to feel these days, that the only way to stay in good graces in society is to just be branded as the world's collective oppressors and to STFU and wallow in remorse (ala the Gillette ad). Don't be surprised if, at the very least, that attitude causes them to vote with their wallets and not see movies that insult them or have stars that insult them.

A fine example of cavilling.

And if these fragile flowers did any homework, they'd know Larson didn't insult them.

That's horse crap. I'm a straight white man, and you certainly don't speak for straight white men.

Those are great.

I remember them in Game Magazine. Anyone remember that? Gods, those puzzles were fun!

...but I always sucked at this particular type of puzzle. I could never see the images. :(
Me neither.

Or maybe the white guys who has a problem with people of color, women, or LGBT people wanting more representation need to just accept that not everyone is like them, and that all of the people who aren't us deserve all of the same kinds of representation we've had for most of history.
The thought they some guys actually find this offensive is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard in my entire life, and deserves no consideration.

Or maybe people should stop strawmanning and painting with a broad brush.

It's subjective. That's my whole point. It's not your right to judge whether someone else should feel outraged or not. Stop presuming you speak for the left-leaning moral-majority.

I mean, I could point you to a dozen articles on The Mary Sue where they go off on a tear about male gaze or the bechdel test as if it's the end of the world. I can't relate to that, but if I were to mock it, then it's just the flipside of your argument. It's...SUBJECTIVE.

Either you accept that people get upset at different things or you're going to try to force your measuring stick on everyone else. The forcing aspect is the thought-police aspect, the fundamentalism, and is the fuel upon which these dumpster fires burn. The lack of self-reflection here is staggering (and lack of empathy, to coin a Star Trek Discovery catch-phrase). Or maybe more importantly, some people just thrive on drama in general as a form of entertainment, so the more this stuff rages onward, the better.

But a thread of like this doesn't go 82+ pages for no reason. I mean, sheesh, it might as well be a debate between Israelis and Palestinians, it's do damn intractable.

I don't believe a single one of them is actually offended. They're just sexist and used it as an excuse and a distraction. We see the exact same behavior over and over again every single time a franchise focuses on a female character or more diverse representation. I'll just be glad when the movie is out and becomes a massive hit so these idiots know they lost another one.

ETA: I realized that a post went between mine and the one below I was responding to.

How about this? We stick with talking about our own opinions rather than assuming that all white guys are racists and on and on and on.

Let's have a discussion about actual opinions rather than people who might have them. Otherwise, there is a whole lot of assumption going on that isn't doing anyone any good whatsoever. nor is it actually propagating good discussion.
