Captain Marvel (2019)

They also didn't start promoting the movie until a couple of months before its release. For whatever reason, Disney doesn't want to promote more Star Wars films while there's an upcoming one. This is why we saw nothing of Rogue One until after the dust settled with The Force Awakens at the box office. Same with The Last Jedi not being promoted until after Rogue One did its business. That was all fine because there were year gaps in between. But with Solo coming out six months later, you think they would make that an exception and actually include the first trailer attached to The Last Jedi's premiere. Nope, they waited until after that film had done its business. That was a big mistake.

It's part of why there was surprise by non-fans over a new Star Wars coming out so soon after.

Does anyone have links to videos as to what Brie Larson actually said. I do a google search and it's very much extreme on either side, but I would like to hear it, barebones, from her. I could continue searching the dregs of the internet looking for some kind of neutral story, but I was wondering if anyone had links readily available. (And I don't follow this thread very much and right now it's at 81 pages.

I'm just getting tired of this controversy and the movie isn't even out yet. Now granted, I do think Brie could have said what she said a different way, but after listening to the John Campea video kind of explaining what was happening, it was much more reasonable than what I've been hearing before. I was originally not going to see the movie, but I am a MCU fan to the point where I think a compromise (And a reasonable one at that) would be to not see it opening weekend, but see it maybe a week or two weeks later. Then the theaters will be quieter and maybe this whole thing will die down to the point where I can enjoy the movie.

As for Brie Larson, The year Room came out, I saw two movies where she was the lead, Room and Short Term 12. I thought she was really good in both those movies, so I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt. I do wonder if she had said something like "it is my hope for a more inclusion and diversity response to this or any movie"... if this would have broiled over faster. I do still think the whole Go Fund Me thing was a terrible idea. If she wants more people to have a screening, than set up a private event, maybe at various areas around the country, where these communities can get together to watch the film and then Brie Larson can introduce the movie before it starts or something. Brie and Disney have the money. Reach out rather than ask people to pay. It might have been seen as controversial, but it would have also been seen (Probably by many more people) as altruistic.

I posted a link to the primary source, upthread.

I'm not sure I understand what this is about. Is this about Brie Larson's comment where she said that she'd like journalists and critics who aren't white and male also to be included in her press events in addition to those who are white and male?

Thank you for that. That actually is a pretty good interview. During this whole thing my mind keeps going back to Aliens and Terminator 2 in terms of women in leading roles. I actually wish those movies were re-released in theaters or people today have a chance to watch them. When I think about powerful female role-models, and there are a lot, I always come back to Sarah Conner and Ellen Ripley. Maybe Captain Marvel will join those ranks. Movies are, and have always been, about connecting the audience to what is on the screen. If there is any connection with Captain Marvel and the audience, then the film has done its job.

Lots of actors have replaced other actors without issue. I don't think recasting had a thing to do with it

SW tends to be way more "puritan" over that, for lack of a better term.

As for Larson, it may just be timing. What she said wasn't bad at all, but apparently there's this sense that men have been getting belittled and insulted by media and big franchises too much over the last few years (Fragile Male Ego reactions to Ghostbuster 2016, Star Wars Sequels, something about Gillette apparently) and they just think Larson added to that.

So to them, their overreaction to her is "We're mad as Hell and not gonna take it anymore!" when it truth there have been no attacks on the. Just their fragile egos.

You can't deny that having anyone else but Ford in the role didn't cause backlash.
A backlash? Maybe, but I am doubtful of the overall impact that it had. Certainly was not the chief reason I saw people not wanting to go see it.

She also clarified that she doesn't want to exclude anyone from the table. She just wants a bigger table. How the frack is that offensive?

Because....

Man, it's worse than fragile egos though. These people are planning boycotts and review bombs, and pretty much ruining things for others. It's not some safe "fragile egos" thing, it's scary insanity.

I still think Disney made a mistake releasing Solo so soon after Last Jedi, especially considering the backlash Last Jedi got. Star Wars seemed to work as a holidays thing, so why did they break up a good thing? It's a shame too because of the new era of Star Wars, Solo is my favorite film.

My theory was always that they expected Mary Poppins to do Star Wars like numbers, and didn't want to compete with themselves.

Mary Poppins (And I haven't seen it, but I heard mixed reactions) should have been a summer release, just to separate Last Jedi and Solo.

I'll deny it all day. I'll admit, I'm not the biggest fan of Ehrenreich, but that's because I don't think he did that good a job in the film. Not because he isn't Ford.

A story I heard is that Disney is sick of the fact all their Star Wars movies were postponed from their original spring release dates to Christmas and were adamant Solo had to keep its spring release date. Honestly, I'm not sure I believe this story, since Episode IX's release was postponed after all the Lord & Miller stuff went down with Solo, but the story is out there all the same.

Yeah, and those Christmas releases were just so disappointing...

That was before Carol got powered up into Binary though.

Carol hasn't been binary in 15 years.

Kurt was showing her Binary powers fizzel out, as he was having Carol accept that she was an alcoholic with a problem.

You don't think that they are connected?

Binary is booze powered.

No drinky, no blasty.
