Captain Marvel (2019)

That's nonsense. There's plenty of female shows and movies out there.
There's more now, but it's far from being representational of actual demographics since the vast majority of shows and movies are centered on white, straight men. It's incredibly ignorant and naive to believe that there is too much representation of women or minorities.

She can fly. The other name is Binary which makes even less sense.
This character used to date Parker in the comics. Now she's old enough to be his mum.

Well Peter in the comics grew up, too. It's just in the movies that their ages have diverged so much.

As for 'Binary', the issue where she gets that name does say something to the effect of her having gained the power of a star, so it's a cosmic/star sounding name. Not as good of one, perhaps, as 'Nova' or 'Quasar', but there is a logic there.

So, quickly throwing this out there......

I rewatched The First Avengers last night. And I started thinking about Coulson crushing on Cap'n in The Avengers. And the trading cards. And I kinda really hope there's a little moment in Captain Marvel with Coulson and his trading cards. Just, somewhere. A little moment....

He could have a Capt. America propaganda posters from 40s in his cubicle, he's really proud of it. It's the one piece of flair he could have in his cubicle.

You know what, I was alsowatching the Avengers movie a little today and thinking the same thing. Maybe he collects one and his other agents think he’s mad.

The sad thing was that wasn't even peak Wolverine.
Wolverine had the dubious distinction of having become popular because he was an unconventional character, but having become so popular that he became an industry standard. It sounds hipster, but I liked Wolverine when most people didn't know who he was.

It hardly requires statistical analysis, only the most casual and cursory of observations.

Maybe it does require statistical analysis. While just checking on when one of my shows is returning on NBC, I saw that 4 of the new shows are women in lead role, the rest are an ensemble mixture, and zero are male in the lead role.
The show I was looking for? Woman lead Blindspot.

Movies are another beast, agreed, but I think television has balanced out.

Took a little bit of digging, but I managed to identify the wing and squadron patches on Carol & Maria's flight suits seen in the trailer. In the right breast is the Air Force Systems Command patch, and on the right shoulder is the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School patch. So it looks like rather than being a USAF officer who transitioned to security at NASA, Carol was instead a test pilot.
We only get a brief glimpse in the trailer (both in orbit & in the hangar), but I'm about 90% sure the aircraft she's testing is a prototype Quinjet (how much do you want to bet it's a Howard Stark design?.) Other shots in the trailer suggest to me that she took it up for an orbital flight (they haven't really use it in the movies so far, but the model in Avengers, Winter Soldier & AoS does have a scramjet) where she encountered that cloaked ship. Presumably something exciting happened, the aircraft blew up, she ejected and was zapped by something (presumably alien) in the wreckage on the ground.

Other things of note here: -
  • They're both wearing pilot wings, which means they have logged under 2000 hours flight time (which is when one gets the Senior Pilot wings.) To me this makes it a little unlikely that Carol is a full bird Colonel at this point, but then she always seemed a little young for that anyway.
  • USAF Systems Command was deactivated in '92, so those scenes should take place at some point prior.
  • That airfield is most likely Edwards, since that's where the USAF Test Pilot school has been based since '78. Aside from testing experimental weapons systems, Edwards was also one of the bases used to land the shuttle, so the NASA connection is still there. Plus if I'm right about it being a Quinjet test flight, there's also a S.H.I.E.L.D. connection.

She did Spy-Shit with "younger" Wolverine before he joined the X-Men.

(A copy of Carol's personality was in control of Rogue's body sometimes, in the 80s, back when Claremont was writing.)

Close quarters assassinations overseas probably.

A few dead Russian diplomats, and Carol is a full bird.
Is a body count how one advances in rank in the espionage game?

I've heard the higher the rank the higher the profile, so they keep such assets at lower ranks.Of course I probably heard that in a fictional setting.

From Uncanny X-Men 158...

Logan: "I was wonderin', though, Carol, about the command pilot wings and "fruit salad" you're wearin'-- are they legit?"

Carol: "As much as yours, Logan. The wings and medals were earned. So was the rank. I was allowed to temporarily upgrade from Major to Colonel on missions. The clout came in useful."

Probably the first time we see her in uniform or find out her rank and background.
