Captain Marvel (2019)

"The last time I trusted somebody, I lost an eye."

What if Fury trusted a Skrull who looked like Carol Danvers?
Oh, now that should be interesting.

Remind me which film that line is from?

Man, if this is set in the '90s, then I hope we see Phil Coulson as a rookie SHIELD agent, since Fury was his Supervising Officer.
That would be very cool even if the character isn't played by Clark Gregg.

Considering this is what he looked like in the early 90's, I think he could pull it off. A hairpiece, a little make-up, some CG in a pinch perhaps. Or there's always the budget conscious solution of just using his voice, or having him out of focus, in the background or something.

Now Ming Na on the other hand, she's barely aged at all since 'Street Fighter', so a Melinda May cameo would be both feasible and awesome. ;)

Hm, that could work. If he only has a scene or two, that might work even better as we've seen it worked for Michael Douglas and Kirk Russell.

I'd be very surprised if we got a Melinda May cameo considering she's only been in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. At least there's precedence for Coulson.

I think it would be easier for Clark Gregg then for Samuel L. Jackson, who presumably would be needed for more than a one scene cameo but would the director be willing to spend his budget there?

Oh I know the odds of them bringing in Ming Na are even more remote than bringing in Gregg given the current rift between the movie & TV higher-ups. But it's fun to think about how awesome it would be for the fanbase and it does seem to be technically feasible *if* they wanted to and *if* it made sense in the context of the story they're telling.

Honestly, I don't think they need to do anything especially elaborate to make Sam Jackson look like he did in the 90's. Just a little make-up, a clean shave and careful use of lighting should do most of the heavy lifting.

Yeah...a period piece in so recent an era would be the ideal opportunity to bring Coulson back in the movies, as it wouldn't step on the toes of the "movie audience thinks he's dead" shtick. Hell, if there were no AoS, I think we'd be expecting them to do something like that.

Both of these pieces of news are a big surprised. I do like the idea of getting to explore a new era of the MCU, and bringing in the Skrulls adds in a big element of the comics we haven't seen in the MCU yet.
I didn't think of all the possibilities when it came to S.H.I.E.L.D. characters, and I'd be pretty happy with any of the characters you guys have mentioned.

The Kree-Skrull war is coming to Captain Marvel!

Feige notes that the Skrulls have been conspicuously absent from the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and even more so if they made contact with Carol Danvers, an Earthling, decades ago.

Captain Marvel will be our twenty-first film in the cinematic universe,” Feige noted, “and we’ve never seen the Skrulls. How come?"
What if Avengers 4 is still untitled because they don't want give away the fact that they are doing Secret Invasion?

I'm pretty sure the plan still is for the whole infinity gauntlet/Thanos plotline to take two movies to wrap up (hence back-to-back filming.) If they're going to do Secret Invasion (not an unreasonable presumption at this point) then it'd have to be either Avengers 5 or 6, if for no other reason than they need another "phase" of movies to set up that people are being replaced.

Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if they start setting all this up in one of the Infinity movies. Off the top of my head, say: one of the Avengers is killed...and their body reverts back to it's natural Skrull form. The we're a Skrull the whole time! But since when!? *cut to black*

All the news coming out for this movie now has me very enthusiastic for it.

Which is great, because as a character, I can't stand Carol, so at least making everything else surrounding her interesting in the movie will bring me into the theatre.

Personally, I've found that she's one of those characters that is often mangled because the writer either doesn't understand the character, or wants to reinvent her into something else.
I really enjoyed the Kelly Sue DeConnick run and even though she was just a bit player, Carol was a good fit in the Alias Jessica Jones books. However, in the more recent books (particularly Civil War II) they've just made her downright insufferable and borderline stupid.

I'll do you one better than that: what if *this* is why we haven't gotten a Black Widow movie yet? ;)

Having an Avenger get killed in one of the Infinity movies but then revealed as a Skull would both give an awesome fake out moment and be a great set up for a secret invasion movie. Now I really want it to happen, even though I'm sure the odds of that are low.

Yeah, I think I'd rather see a Secret Invasion movie as Avengers 5 or 6. It really seems to me like the kind of thing that would work a lot better if it got at least a few movies of hinting and build up before we get the big reveal.

The only problem with that theory is that we saw Natasha's childhood memories in AoU.

I suppose that would depend on whether Skrull Natasha knows she's a Skrull. After all, the perfect doppelganger sleeper agent is one with all of the memories and personality of the original. Or she was replaced *after* that point in time. Maybe the switch happened during the chaos of the UN bombing?

Either way, the less powerful characters would be the most obvious candidates since you'd have a job explaining how a Skrull can replicate the powers of say Hulk, Vision, Spider-Man, Captain Marvel or Scarlet Witch (at least so long as Marvel can't use Super-Skrulls! ;) ) So Natasha, Clint, Tony, Fury, Maria Hill and the like would be the most likely candidates. Rogers would be up in the air IMO since enhanced strength, speed and agility by human standards probably wouldn't be all that difficult to replicate, but I'm not certain.

I mean sure, they're aliens, anything is possible but from a storytelling perspective it seems more logical that the reason a physically and technologically powerful race like the Kree could be in a prolonged stalemate with a race of shapeshifters is if said shapeshifters were comparatively weak and lacking in resources, making the sneaky shape-shifting their only real advantage. If Skrulls were the physical and technological equals of the Kree Empire then they'd have a clear advantage and would have won aeons ago.

Indeed, one could further extrapolate that the primary reason why the Kree attempted to create Inhuman foot-soldiers is precisely because the Skrulls couldn't replicate exotic abilities and thus couldn't replace them. No infiltrators = Skrull proof.
Yes, the flaw in this plan is that the Kree officers commanding them could be replaced which may be partly why this program was abandoned. Too dangerous. Hell, for all we know a Skrull could have instigated Hive's rebellion in the first place...and been his first meal. I mean he was a shapeshifter of sorts, no?

Shortly after the events of The Incredible Hulk, General, now Secretary of State, Thaddeus Ross had a heart-attack while on the golf course.

After hours of surgery, appropriate rehabilitation and gaining certain perspectives that he previously lacked, Ross fully recovered...

...or did he?

For those still wondering, Carol will not be in Infinity War.
Could be Carol winds up in space for a few decades and returns to Earth in time to join the Avengers., but only a few years have passed for her.

That was my thought as well.

It could perhaps work something like this. Suppose she gets her powers as a result of exposure to Skrull technology rather than Kree, an event that alerts her to the larger Skrull threat. After defeating the immediate threat to Earth, Carol finds herself on a spacecraft enroute to the Skrull Homeworld.

After gaining control of the situation and the craft, Carol reverses course to Earth. However, the craft is damaged and can't achieve full Warp. This is where Einsteinian theories of Relativity, time and space that I don't pretend to fully comprehend would come in, making a short trip home for her a 25-year trip in reality.
