Calling All Shippers! Mediation Thread

I still think the only way around these 'shipper, character vs. character situations is the "ignore" function. After all the talk in this thread, no one has changed at all so I just don't see any other solution.

Yup. Everyone knows what they should and shouldn't be doing. Everyone knows what comments will stir up the other side and that they shouldn't bait. Everyone knows they shouldn't respond when baited.

Just be an adult and control yourself.

However not everyone is going to apply this and that unfortunatly is a fact that's not likely to change.

^ I know how you feel.

I liked Trip before I warmed up to Archer. I didn't start really liking Archer's character until after Judgement.

I've called myself a character development junkie. I like angsty character moments, backstories, and anything else that adds depth to characters.

This season I was disappointed in what happened to Trip's character. But, if I express my disappointment, am I ready to handle the possible debate back and forth? So I usually don't say some things here.

In case anyone's interested, my beef with Trip's character development this season was about the grief that finally came up again in the home stretch of the season. Delayed grief was a good way to bring it up again, but it seemed like the writers had forgotten about the grief angle and desperately needed some way to bring it up again. And the low number IMO of Trip engineering miracles. I would like Trip to pull more uber cool engineering miracles next season.

I don't think the ignore feature is the only solution. I think people can changethe way they say things in their posts and the way they respond to posts if they want to. Thinking about problems I've seen around here has made me look at my own behavior, and ask myself what role I've played in 'shippy disagreements.

If nothing else, this thread has gotten people talking about the subject. And made people think about it.

I want everyone involved to cross themselves and say 20 Hail Coto’s.

Be nice. Say your Hail Coto’s and forgive one another. It will make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside if you do.

Now ya' see...this makes sense! After reading serious post after serious post, I just have to read this and I feel cheerful and able to cope with the angst-iness of this thread in general...

 Actually doing it will have me laughing so hard, nothing could make me feel bad...well, somethings could, but nothing that could happen on this BBS.

Personally, I think that if you must read, if there is no way you can stay out of another ship's thread, remember that its a case of like-minded people enjoying themselves, and that they aren't going to accept anybody attempting to rain on their parade.

People are coming to this BBS for their own enjoyment and for most people, having people trying to force their opinions down your throat isn't fun.

Who here really wants to ruin somebodies day? :)

***hail Coto, hail Coto, hail Coto, hail Coto...***

There, I've said it and feel much better :)!

I don't know why everyone is so excited about Coto? Though the Lawrence of Arabia reference intrigues me......

I was just checking out the Moderator Actions forum. I will humbly suggest everyone go there and read T'Bonz's thread.

Please.

Horror exists everywhere death, famine, rape, genocide that is alot of why we argue here---we are powerless in the real world to stop things.

We are powerless in the real world, that is true, but that does not apply here. We can stop being nasty to one another. It's easy.

It does not mean we can see eye to eye on everything, and everybody suddenly starts loving the same thing about Star Trek, it just means we quit being nasty to each other. That's all.

:)

Should I test that spider1? Cause it won't happen. I don't care who hates Archer and will defend extreme comments of course but hey he is the Captain and that isn't going to change.I like Trip but find his character very secondary in nature and somewhat 2D ---starting to flesh out a bit. I loved Trip in the Forgotten this season and thought CT did a great job showing us a subtle difference between Trip and Sim (I told him so as well at the Lightspeed thing last December) in Similtude. Similtude was an Archer episode to me though. Archer and T'Pol being the main characters are more developed and therefore I feel more drawn to them.I also "like" both characters with all their flaws. I like the other characters but more for their interactions with the two primary characters.

Archer is the main character, no one has ever denied that. Everyone else is a secondary character including Trip and T'Pol. However, ENT is not the Archer/T'Pol show no matter how much some people would like it to be. In terms of character development, I think Trip is actually the most interesting and well developed personality, mainly because of CT's superior acting skills. The thing that really differentiates him from the others is that he always rises to the occasion, even when given poor material.

Saying that Similitude is an Archer episode is like saying that Twilight was really a Trip episode. Similitude was all about Connor Trinneer's brilliant acting with some very good supporting work from Scott, John, and Jolene.

dm --I agree with your right to view CT as a great actor. I will never get it but hey I think Ben Browder is the best actor around :)

I think a reminder about phrasing is due.

Saying "I think Coto is the best thing to happen to Trek" is great. Saying "Coto IS the best thing to happen to Trek" ruffles feathers.

And since it's been said 20 times already and nothing has changed, I don't really know why I'm saying it again. I'm starting to feel like this thread is just circling around things by trying to placate everyone. That solves nothing, and just disguises the irritation.

Fact is, I just don't like some people on here, but that doesn't mean I have the right to disrespect them.

Very good point Jenna. Stating opinion as fact peeves me. It's also a big whole in someone's argument.

I personally don't like always and never. Those two words usually make a statement untrue.

I'm beginning to wonder if that is true. People have brought up solutions to the problem. It's up to posters to use them. That's the hard part.

Fact is, I just don't like some people on here, but that doesn't mean I have the right to disrespect them.

Amen. People have different opinions around here. They should be allowed to express their opinion. They shouldn't have people jumping on them for expressing themselves.

Lots of good stuff here but I want to highlight this. Nobody's going to have any fun in these threads if each side can't enjoy their 'ship fully in their individual threads without having someone from the other camp come in every five posts with a comment about the other side's POV.

That's not to say repeated jabs at the other 'ship in your own thread are okay, but the A/T'ers should be able to discuss their 'ship in peace, and so should the T/T'ers.

Like I said, we can't "ban" anyone from the other threads. That's why we have this mediation thread going. Personally, I'd like to see you guys work this out for yourselves--establish your own boundaries and then have all the 'shippers respect them. A kind of honor system if you will.

I think within the threads is usually ok--I have been treated ok when I agree with comments in the T/T thread--it is in the "general" threads things get ugly IMHO.Comments that are related to the perception of a character on the show should not be policed by shippers nor should the mods be needed.

I would agree -- I don't mind people going into the A/T'P thread ... unless their comment [which is sometimes the case] is: A/T'P sux. That just seems like bad manners.

Usually the problem is a thread that has a potential to become a hot item. And 75% of the time, they aren't started by a shipper or person who has a favorite character.

You're right about that. It's just plain rude! I can't speak for anybody besides myself but, I would NEVER post anything that could rile people up because I am in here to have fun and I hope that everyone else is having a good time, too. If it ever got to a point in any of the threads that I like to visit where it wasn't fun, I would stop visiting here all together. I think that some people just like to start s**t, ya know? I want to be silly and have fun with people....that's why I come in. I don't even care if people don't agree with me, just don't be nasty.

There's just no need for it!
