Spoilers Call back to "Aquiel"?

Unimatrix Q

Don't know if anyone mentioned it by now, but i think the ashes left after the vaporization of the Bird soldiers by Beverly could be a call back to "Aquiel", with it's talk about residue left after being shot with a phaser on a deadly setting.

Could the species from this episode be the "forgotten enemy"?

Yeah, i also don't like "Aquiel". But i think this aspect was really strange and only mentioned in this episode before iirc.

I’m almost sure I can remember residue from a high level phaser shot was mentioned pre-Aquiel but I can’t think of when that might’ve been. I could be getting mixed up with Eye of The Beholder, although I know that was the following season.

Yeah but Riker found the residue odd, if that's what happened with all phaser vaporizations, I don't think it would be considered odd.

One of the Titan bridge crew the same species, Haliian, as Aquiel, so someone was thinking about that episode at some point.

By the way, it would also fit with Terry's comment about not needing to have watched TNG Season 1 and 2 for PIC Season 3.

Contrary to if the Bluegills are involved...

I don't think they would go back to a story of very Dominion like shape shifters rather than use the Dominion ones.
It feels like the Dominion story reconned the idea that shape shifters were pretty unique and I don't see that changing any time soon.

I'd prefer that too. But i wonder if they could have retconned the creature from "Aquiel" into a changeling.

Remember that Ron Moore revealed at some point that the Dominion knew about the Federation, long before the Bajoran Wormhole was discovered.

Until Starfleet explored the Gamma Quadrant, I imagine shape shifters were pretty unique to those aboard the Enterprise.

I mean, we had the shapeshifter in TUC, as well as the Dauphin in TNG. So changelings were not entirely unheard of.
Thats my point.
When Odo came along I felt like there was a narrative change where he was seen as unique. Never any mention of the Dominion meeting different shape shifters or interacting with Alpha shape shifters.

The earlier shape shifters seemed to be limited to humanoid shapes. The Changelings were much more versatile

It is probably a coincidence (or not?) but the episode right before this is the Moriarty Episode "Ship in a bottle."

Considered what we've seen so far, I really do wonder how they are getting Moriarty in Picard. That seemed so random in the trailer.

Cooleddie74 in another thread speculated that
Vadic might be a holoskin of Moriarty. It is an idea that I think has some merit.

Edit: Even though it is speculation and not a true spoiler, plus this thread is tagged spoiler anyways, I have decided to hid this in a spoiler tag.

I fail to see why anyone would have made a callback that mundane. The dude just disintegrates in a certain manner. Why on earth would that be some kind of ‘callback’ that 99.99% of viewers wouldn’t even get?

Maybe Terry likes that episode. Sometimes writers work things in just for their own interest. Farscape did that a couple of times. No one would recognize the reference except the writer but he did it anyway and asked Ben Browder to say it a certain way.
