Californians (and people who know people in CA)

I need help! Meet outdoor kitty! He's a lot sweeter than he looks in this picture, I promise.

Basically, I need help finding him a home. I know it's a long shot, but I know we have some Californians here on the board and I thought maybe someone would know someone who would be willing to take him in and give him a good home.

I live in the Bay Area (South Bay, more precisely), but I'd be willing to drive to deliver him to his new home depending on specifics.

He's a neutered male cat, about five or six years old, who showed up on our patio one day and has slowly melted my heart. I really would like to let him into our home but circumstances are keeping me from doing that. I would take him in a heartbeat though, because he has been affectionate from day one. He lets me pet him, pick him up, and seems completely trusting. He's clearly starving for affection and loves cuddling up to me when I'm outside.

I took him to the vet today (and he was so well-behaved in the car!) and had him checked out. Except for a few battle scars, he's in good health. Like I said he's already neutered, he's tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia, and he got his rabies shot and a few other vaccines. Medical care paid for, he's just ready for a new home!

I'm looking into shelters and Nerys Myk and his wife have been really sweet and are helping as well. But the shelters here are all overflowing with cats and I don't want to give him to animal control because I know he'll just end up getting put down. And this is a cat that really belongs with people.

So please, if you are thinking about getting a cat or know someone in the area who might be interested, please let me know! You can PM me if you don't want to post in the thread. Like I said, I know this is a long shot but we have such a great community of people here on this forum that I had to try. Or if you know of a no-kill shelter or sanctuary around here that has space, please let me know about that as well.

For everyone who has made it through this whole thing, thanks for reading and taking the time to look. Kitty appreciates your efforts! And so do I. :)

He looks like my late cat, Eddie. :( I'd take him, but I'm in Virginia...(and Rory would not approve!)

Thanks KM. Yeah, I really wish we could take him in. Or that I didn't have to limit new homes to this area, but I can only drive so far with him. He's just such a lover that I'd hate for him to stay out all the time.

If I didn't believe you saying he was friendly, I wouldn't think he's the nicest cat to be around. He definitely looks like a loner who would scratch your face off if you try to touch him.
That being said, I wish I could help. I love cats and would be more than willing to give him a home if I lived near by...being on the other side of the country though, I don't think the commute would go so well.

Best of luck in finding him a home.

I'm of no help either, having got a second cat about 5 minutes ago. She's an orange tabby named Sophia that my neighbor just dropped off. Hope she gets along with my other kitty.

Have you tried Craigslist?

I'd take him off your hands in a heartbeat, but I'm several thousand miles away. Best of luck, Kes. I know you'll manage to find somebody...don't give up.

I've actually decided not to do Craigslist for multiple reasons, but thanks for the tip!

He looks like a mean motherfucker. I like him! :D

Shhhh I'm trying to sell him as cuddly! He is a street cat in the sense that he has visible battle wounds. Mostly in the form of bits of his ear gone. But he's shockingly cuddly and affectionate. That's really the reason why I'm pushing so hard to get him a family. He really belongs with people and would thrive with affection, I believe.

I appreciate the words of support from everyone. Even if you don't live here, if you know people who live out here who might want a cat, please reach out to them! I'm determined to find this guy a family.

You could try what just happened to me. Knock on someone's door and say, "Here's a cat." :)

You could try the trick of "Can you sit my cat for a couple of days?" Then a couple of days later say, "No, that's not my cat. My cat his orange. See, here's his picture. Are you sure you weren't talking to my sister?"

So far orange Sophia kitty and my black kitty have no idea they aren't the only cat in the house. She's lounging on me, checking out my laptop, and at some point he'll wake up, come bounding out of the attic, and turn the corner to jump on me. Then things on my lap are going to get really exciting. Maybe I should hide under some extra blankets.

Sorry. He looks like "Kitty," the poorly-socialized cat I was putting food out for. Until she bit me enough to have blood dripping. Today was the first day I had no food for her.

No biting here. I was sitting outside today and he curled up against my legs and fell asleep purring. I wish I knew what his story was and why he was abandoned. I can't understand it. He belongs with a family.

I have a friend in LA (a mile or two south of the Paige Museum). I'll ask him but it might take several days till he answers as he has no computer of his own.
He used to have cats and is familiar with their needs. He even has a garden (with mice, propably - that should appeal to your stray :) ) If he can't take him, he might perhaps know someone who could.

Does Little Redhead still post here? She's from your area and would seem like a cat person to me.

He might not necessarily have been abandoned. He might have simply ran away. Even domesticated male cats are territorial, so if another tom cat showed up in his neighborhood and physically forced him to leave, he could have simply taken off on his own, rather than sticking around and getting into fights every day.

All of my cats are outside cats and I've seen this happen often. Female cats tend to stick around while the male cats take off or are forced out by the strongest local male. This may not be true of every breed, but it has been my experience over the years.

cats actually "time share" spaces. my cats are very rarely in the same room together; when they are, fur flies. really.

good luck Kestra, he's lucky to have such an ethical kind person looking out for him!

Wow. My mom, who lives in SF, picked up a new shelter cat for her old man out in the 'burbs literally this past weekend. He might be been a great fit, but he's got two cats now and that's enough. Good luck...

Too bad my wife is allergic, as he's the perfect/same age to socialize with my other two... :(

Best of luck, Miss Kes -- I'll ask around here in Elk Grove and Roseville area, if it helps.

Cheers,
-CM-

That absolutely does help, thanks CM! Gaith, I'm happy that other kitties are getting homes too. If you know people that live around the Bay Area, I just ask that you spread the word. Even if they can't take the cat in, they might know someone who would be interested.

And even if you can't help in any way with this kitty, encourage people to adopt animals from shelters and rescues. And do so yourself! There are so many other sweet animals out there who need homes. Especially ones that aren't little puppies or kittens anymore. You never know, the next member of your family might be waiting for you right now!

Yeah, the next member of my family is waiting for me in the living room, where she sticks her head out to get petted and then hisses at me. Hopefully she'll stop once she gets settled in. Only one crazy cat fight so far, thank goodness. :)

I'll see if anyone here in the East Bay is looking for cat. My wife loves em, but I'm super allergic unfortunately (and boy do cats loves me, they make a bee line for me if there is one in the area)
