I distinctly remember an ext. shot of the ship in the cloud entity being just a re-use of an ext. flyby from the opener...not uncommon in the 1st season.

No, it was quite different.
I also think that the shots with the entity inside Picard attacking the Bridge Crew can also be updated.

The effects of the 'Edo god' being both in and not in our dimension can be updated.
I am also sure that shots of the Enterprise and the 'Edo god' in orbit around the planet are reused.

There was a lot of that. You'd have to re-shoot the entire series if you wanna take all of it out.

the Next Gen needs aa special effects upgrade to bring it up to par with the later series and movies.
The show's efffects show their age. Season 1 and 2's stories would be enhanced by having the picture overhauled.

My only problem with the effects of this episode are the inconsistent sizes of the Enterprise and Stargazer. The Stargazer is theoretically a lot smaller than than she appears in this episode -- just as the Excelsior is significantly smaller than it appears during the repeatedly recycled Excelsior/Enterprise side-by-side shot.
