By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!)

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

NOTHING "NEEDS" TO BE REDONE IN TERMS OF SFX, THINGS ARE FINE AS THEY ARE.

Fair enough. If the "redone" version of TNG is produced and released on DVD, you don't have to buy them. If they are on TV, you don't have to watch them.

However, I will.

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

Ditto - while I have all seven seasons of TNG on DVD, I'd rebuy all seven seasons if they updated the series: having now watched several episodes with updates specifically in mind, I'd be very excited if they actually did it. There's definitely a lot of potential there.

I have been wanting to post about "The Last Outpost" for a few days now, but only just recently figured out how to get around the problems at TrekCore (for screencaps). Hopefully, in the next couple of days, I'll get back to posting in this thread.

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

Can they please cut the following stupid scenes:

- Troi floating through the sky in the "Eyes In The Dark" episode.

- Riker shattering his mind...literally in "Frame Of Mind"

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

You didn't like the "shattering mind" effect? I thought it was pretty cool. Although - now that I really think about it - I guess it is kind of like the 'Village of the Damned' remake where Christopher Reeves attempts to block the children from reading his mind and we actually see a brick wall in his mind breaking down as the kids try to penetrate it (I did think that was pretty lame)...

While I agree on the silliness of Troi's floating in "Night Terrors," isn't taking that scene out and replacing it with something else the slippery slope that leads to things like "Han Shot First!" :D

"The Last Outpost"
5:40 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused
9:45 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN
11:42 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN
12:47 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN
15:25 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN
19:23 - the hologram on the conference table can be redone
21:57 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN
26:07 - the planet surface (and subsequent shots of the planet surface) can be redone (primarily, the sky and background)
26:40 - the shot of Riker on the ledge can be redone
28:51 - the beam of the Ferengi weapon can be redone (as can the same effect when Riker is fired upon a second time)
28:54 - the energy as it hits and travels between Geordi, Data, and Riker can be redone (as can the same effect used when Riker is hit a second time)
29:15 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN (the lights on the ships are just “turned off”)
32:32 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN
33:33 - the phaser beam being ’pulled into’ the crystals can be redone
33:40 - the beam of the Ferengi weapon being pulled into the crystals can be redone
34:26 - the ‘cloud’ that appears can be redone
41:11 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN (the only difference is that this time, the lights are shown coming back on)
43:33 - the shot of the Enterprise and Ferengi ship in orbit is reused AGAIN

Some pictures illustrating need for updated special effects...

This shot is reused *10* times in the course of this episode. While I realize there isn't too much they could redo in terms of interesting shots (both ships are incapable of moving throughout most of the episode), they still have options. They did a cool shot looking at the Enterprise from the perspective of underneath the Ferengi vessel. At the very least (and I've let this slide until now), they could give us some cool 'space phenomena' - moons, nebula, etc. If they combined the different angles with different zoom levels, you could easily come up with 10 shots that were all quite different.

First thing to note: the sky. This sky does not match what they do for most of the exterior scenes we see in the episode (just look at the screencap below), so those scenes should be updated to match this scene once it too is updated. Second thing: the landscape. These don't look like real hills and mountains. The update should keep the color and tone but do a better job of selling this.

Again, two things to note. First - you can tell this is a soundstage and where the back wall starts. They need to change the sky (as mentioned above) and edit the hills so we really believe the horizon is much further away. Second - the 'portal' as a cloud: this effect really isn't that bad, but it can be redone.

Even more minutia... (after 4 episodes)
- The number of times Picard uses the word “Hell”: 4
- The number of times Riker uses the word “Hell”: 1

- The number of times Picard uses the word “Damn” or “Damned”: 3
- The number of times Riker uses the word “Damn” or “Damned”: 2

- The number of times Data provides synonyms or a definition of something: 2

- The number of times Troi gives Picard an emotional report that was blindingly obvious even without Betazoid talents: 2

- The number of times Geordi uses his VISOR’s capabilities to report on something: 2

- The number of times Michael Dorn doesn't appear in an episode: 1
- The number of times Wil Wheaton doesn't appear in an episode: 1

Phil Farrand's best observation on this episode from his 'Nitpickers' books...
"Shortly after the energy-draining field seizes the Enterprise, Picard sends La Forge to Main Engineering to get a report, since communications are out. The next time we see La Forge - who is currently the helmsman and a lieutenant, junior grade - he has apparently taken over Engineering! What happened to the chief engineer?"

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

^ Picard knew his shit. MacDougal, Leland T. Lynch & Argyle weren't up to scratch and he was prepping La Forge for the next season. ;)

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

I'm enjoying this thread. I've come to it a little late though, or I would have suggested keeping track of the amount of times Worf suggests something (fighting usually), only for the crew to do the exact opposite.

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

IT used to get tiresome that whenever the enterprise-D fired it's phasers for any reason that they always used the same shot of the saucer hull phaser ring firing. It was long played out and became boring. Even yesterday's enterprise kept using the same phaser banks..
to make it different than TOs the ykept using teh same optical of the upper phasers firing. bummer.
in the season 7 opener they used the bottom phasers under the engine hull to destroy something. that blew my mind that the discovered that the enterprise had different phaser banks to use !

I hope this thread hasn't gone quiet permanently--I've really enjoyed reading your write-ups on these episodes, DostoyevskyClone.

Thirded. This is one of the most entertaining reads on the TrekBBS. :)

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

Damn! And here I was thinking this thread was going to fade into oblivion!

Thanks guys - I really appreciate it. I've been watching the fourth season of Nip/Tuck on DVD these last few weeks (in addition to 'Around the Horn' and 'PTI' which I discovered are now streamed for free on ESPN.com) and work has also really picked up due to it being the end of the semester (I'm a secondary English teacher for those who didn't know).

I still have the first season DVD set sitting on top of my DVD player so I'll pick this thread back up since there's so much interest.

In all honesty, I don't think I'll get through too many episodes until January 7th (I'll be out of town over the Christmas break), but I already watched 'Where No One Has Gone Before' and have most of my notes on that. I'll post that tomorrow and see what I can do over the break. After that, I should be able to get back on a (hopefully) daily schedule.

Thanks again!

Not very 24th-century-looking: this image (or a variant of this design) is seen several times in this episode and definitely could use a rework...

2027825170102548360S500x500Q85.jpg

This background is used several times - they could do all types of things with this now using CGI to really sell the point that this is far, far away...

2825593640102548360S500x500Q85.jpg

To be honest, I'm not sure if they could truly sell fire effects using today's CGI, but I know it could look a lot better than this...

Even more minutia... (after 5 episodes)

- The number of times Riker uses the word “Hell”: 1

- The number of times Data provides an "approximation": 1

- The number of times Troi gives Picard an emotional report that was blindingly obvious even without Betazoid talents: 3

After the first test, Data tells Picard that it will take a subspace signal "fifty-one years, ten months, nine weeks, sixteen days..." to get back to the Federation. Fifty-one years, ten months, nine weeks? Why not fifty-two years, one week, and sixteen days? Maybe Data's home planet used a month with more than an average of four weeks in it. If that's true, though, all his estimates would be off, according to Earth standards. Then again, maybe in the future everyone uses the metric system.

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

I'd just like to mull around this thread another time and declare how much fun it is to read. Makes me want to watch TNG again. I hope the thread hasn't died an early death...

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

Haha, wow, this will end up being THE ultimate TNG thread if it keeps going.

Things should pick up after you start S5-6 as the effects get noticeably better.

How about the number of times Picard gets captured while in the company of Security Chief/Tactical Officer Worf, an accomplished Klingon warrior???

It is already! (Nothing personal, Spider's "A Journey"). I do hope future installments are on the way. :)

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

Glad to see an update even though I'm a month late in noticing it. I really have enjoyed all of your analyses so far and hope you continue!

Re: By episode: Updating FX for all 176 episodes (+ minutia!

I really had no idea that this thread would be regarded like this - you guys are making me feel guilty for not doing a better job of keeping up with it!
