Its amusing to me because I was told there was no great outcry over this recast. Well, between here, reddit and YouTube I am highly amused by this now.

that anyone could play Khan instead of him. Maybe even an Indian? Blasphemy, I know.
So, if you were show runner and he told you no, what would you have done? What’s the solution to this big deal that’s worth getting worked up about?
call him Boddox instead and create a new character
It would've been cool to get Brophy to reprise the role, but we don't know the reasoning behind the change.
As far as Montalban goes, he was still a bit of a big deal at the time, starring in Fantasy Island. Which was a solid performer for ABC.
Gotta disagree. No actor "owns" a role forever.
Parts get recast sometimes. That's just how acting works--and always has.
Really, I'm surprised that nobody addressed this issue in the episode 5 discussion thread.
True to a degree, but I also loved nuTrek. If you recast Picard, Dara, etc, it’s ok to recast everybody. If you recast one of them, then it strongly interferes with my suspension of disbelief.
All the way down to a one shot wonder like Maddox?
I know it's cliché, but how do you feel about Saavik?

Seriously though I guess because Maddox had a build up and Saavik didn’t.
If the cast were everything there wouldn't have been three different Tora Ziyals in just two years or so.

Heck, they even had two different actors play Pike in just TOS.
I'm one who really doesn't like recasting but I also take things on a case by case basis. Having a new actor for a reboot doesn't bother me. Rebooting and recasting aren't the same thing. And if a character is minor and under a lot of makeup, that generally doesn't bother me either or it just slips under the radar.
Saavik still bugs me 30 years on yet the Ziyal thing doesn't register.
