Brian Brophy didn’t return?

the most disappointing thing about the latest Picard episode was how they used Maddox. In the end, he just told Picard what WE already knew, that his daughter was on the Artifact. If that was his only function (from a plot standpoint) I might have been okay with that. But I wanted to see something between Picard and Maddox that reflected the great debates they had over sentience and android rights they had in the series.. and I wanted to know if Picard's warning, that such a "race" would become slaves (like ones on Mars) could have something to do with Maddox, or at least have Picard point out how his warning came true. I wanted to see discussion!

but we've been there. we've done that. that discussion would've been redundant.

No offense, as this isn’t aimed specifically at you, but I wonder if most people even remembered Brian Brophy’s name before PIC, and are now whining about why he wasn’t invited back just to whine about something. I know I sure didn’t, even though I’m a huge Trekkie and definitely remembered the Maddox character. The actor, I could have cared less about.

Honestly, I didn’t remember who Bruce Maddox was nor the name of the actor who played him when I started watching PIC. I was so rusty I even had to look up what the Tal Shiar was.

But since the PIC scripts have been blowing up Maddox’s name and making the search for him a big plot point, I googled him.

Then with every passing episode, and every Maddox mention, I expected almost a “Luke at the end of Force Awakens” type appearance.

Instead, there was all this build up to see a Bruce Maddox that didn’t look or act anything like the first.

So I ask myself, why bother?

"What!?! They didn't recast..."
[Googles actor name.]
"...Brian Brophy as Bruce Maddox!?! That's an outrage!"

"Doctor Maddox, I served with Luke Skywalker. I knew Luke Skywalker. Luke Skywalker was a friend of mine. Doctor, you're no Luke Skywalker."

I disagree. Endless action and violence is also redundant. Philosophy is definitely a plus.. differing views is what makes Trek ... TREK. I mean do you think the Bones/ Spock arguments are redundant.
Besides, I'm walking about adding one scene.
we had a whole episode that's about those two characters discussing this issue. arguments were made, counter-arguments were heard. not much of it made sense anyway but in the end JL went away with his smug victorious grin.
Can there be anything added to the topic by one of them that wasn't in any shape or form already adressed?

As long as the scene ended with Maddox tossing Soji over a cliff, I would have been all for it!

Nah, they just need to take Picard and toss the series over the cliff. This last episode was embarrassing. I hope the next one is better. At least this Maddox crap is done and over with.

I recently watched 'The Measure of a Man' and I honestly didn't find Brophy's performance a stand out. Maddox is a one note archetype for most of it and you're not supposed to have any real emotional connection with Maddox, except to hate him. Ultimately he's just a tool to showcase Patrick Stewarts shakespearing pacing and pontificating.

Soooooo why bring him back and make him relevant if he sucked so bad? Like I said, I didn’t know who he was, I had to google him because they kept referencing him in the new series.

Android offspring of Data. They got a character from the past connected to him. The real story will be Jurati. Maddox was just a catalyst for the turn in her from naive scientist to something else from this point.

mostly because they needed a character who was the leading expert in the UFP on synthetic life with a relationship to Picard and Data. And Star Trek already had that character. If they had invented a new one, fans would have asked "But what about Maddox? Shouldn't HE be here, instead of...?"

Please, why is it that an actor from the studio's stables who left an impression on no one needed to be brought back? I saw nothing remarkable in Brian Brophy's perfomance. He may be a good actor and have deep insights into the craft, but it may well be that television was his paycheck, but the stage was his love. The only thing tying him to Star Trek is that the character he played fit into the back story of one of the series' central characters. That does not mean Brophy deserves a return trip to Star Trek. Indeed, he probably knew that "Measure of a Man" was, in Jeffrey Combs' words, a "one-er."
