News Boba Fett Movie in the Works With James Mangold

Rogue One focused on a group of new, unknown characters and grossed over $1 billion.

Except "Rogue One" (RO) did it first, and while the franchise was still on a fresh and high note. This would be the first standalone/tie-in, which would have people understandably interested. And on a safe issue (the death star, everybody loves that big logo in space). And all based on a minute's worth of dialogue and 30 second text crawl. For 2 hours. Doesn't matter if it's got a fitting look to it, it looks seamless but does it feel seamless? The characters were all cardboard, save for Tarkin and he's sadly used the least. Leia doesn't blink at all so she looks even more scary as a result. The story"telling" hopscotched around planets more abruptly than anything else ever made. Even worse than any of my posts. Official continuity got ignored despite this type of story needing to adhere to official continuity because the story it's referencing takes place shortly later (facepalm). Vader's moment of glory looks great but sticks out badly compared to "A New Hope". Or was Vader merely half-asleep in episodes IV-VI to make up for all the Force power he used in RO? (Er, I hope not!)

What's Fett going to do? How will audiences, casual or otherwise, be intrigued and entertained for 2 hours as he roams around the galaxy capturing good guys for the Empire? Or is his origin going to actually do something big and do what "Solo" should have done and start Boba off as a decent chap but has an epiphany or something? Will it make Fett's ultimate death, falling into a Sarlack pit with the pit belching for lame comedy relief afterward, be any less bland? (Forgive me, but Kennedy didn't kill Star Wars. If it didn't die in 1983, the 1997 special edition killed it. Then came the prequels *shudder*... Ever since then, all people wanted was something mindless that felt good. TFA was effectively perfect in that regard.)

And it could be worse: What if "Fett" takes place after "Return of the Jedi"? He's upchucked out of Sarlack's pit due to indigestion (or ends up out of the other side, eww) and because they brought back the comedy team ousted from "Solo" since Boba deserved a comedy outing whereas Solo needed to be serious. Or might that be better, a Fett Sequel over a Boba Prequel? Either way, without any vision or point, 2 hours of Fett wandering around will make people long for the 1978 holiday special instead... or, worse, the Donny *& Marie skit... (*shudder* 1978 hair and beard styles *shudder* )

I think a Fett movie can be good just like a Solo one. They just can't really feel epic or fresh unless your doing a complete reboot and feel no obligation to what once was done. PLus combine it with "Star Wars" fatigue and I think the issue's resolve less on how good the movies will be but more about how popular they will become.

People like to dismiss the importance of the fanboys but to me one fanboy is like 5 casual fans in that if they love a movie they will go back again and again in a movie theater to see it. Hardcore fans are the difference between a modest success or a failure to a massive hit. If people are tired of Star Wars then maybe they go see a Bobba Fett movie once and that is it. Maybe they get the blu-ray but don't care about the toys and maybe they don't even bother with the Blu-ray and are content to watch it on what will be the Disney Streaming service.

I think the fundamental difference between a Fett movie and a Solo movie is that we already have a fairly good idea of his backstory, both from his minor role on AotC and his appearances on TCW (and yes, Solo proved LF are willing to bet on at least a certain percentage of their movie audience being up on the animated shows!)

This would work to it's advantage and allow it to jump right in without having to set up and explain too much of suffer from the same "checklist syndrome" that somewhat hampered 'Solo' at times. We already know what the armor is about, where he got his ship from and what he looks like under the helmet.

As for whether they should go with Morrison or Logan; why not both? I can foresee a possible scenario where the movie flashes back and forth from a younger pre-ANH Boba to an older, post Sarlacc Boba.
That or the plot could involve some other left over clone in some capacity. Rex would be fun to see in live action, but it could also be some random ex-ARC trooper. Maybe go the Jodo Kast/Twin Engines of Destruction route and have Fett facing off with another mercenary operating on his reputation, with the added pathos of him being a living reminder of his past.
They could even go the Mad Max: Fury Road and have Fett just be there through someone else's story, which permits them from having to give him to much of an emotional arc and maintain his stoic badass presence, but without draining the story of all life and substance.

Most of all though, this could get us that "retelling of 'The Searchers' but in Star Wars" they mentioned a few years back, complete with a grizzled old live action Cad Bane. Yes please!

Boba Fett is not my first choice for a subject, but I've no doubt that there are a slew of stories involving him that would each make for an exciting and successful outing. There are also about a zillion ways to make a flop. It all depends on the execution of the film.

Shame they can't get Harrison Ford back. Have old him and old Solo have to work together to rescue Chewie who has been enslaved somewhere. Then kill him off a the end of the movie. Solo and Chewie will eventually get to the place they were at in "Force Awakens."

Whatever the premise, I'll be quite happy if they don't go with the Solo/Fett rivalry this time around. It never made much sense in the EU even after the Sarlacc incident and even less beforehand.
I mean why would a Smuggler be a rival to a Bounty Hunter? They don't compete. One just gets sent after the other if they're late on payments. Hell, at one point or another Han might have cause to hire Fett himself, either as extra muscle on a job or to collect a debt owed him for a change.
Lando did mention in passing he owed some money to Aurra Sing, and that only seems possible if he'd hired her for just such a job.

I'd enjoy a Boba Fett movie set after he falls into the Sarlacc:

This would probably be my preferred way to do it.

People saying that no one is asking for a Boba Fett film. Well, I found the one fan (and there are probably more) who is asking for it. So, there's that :)

It is a shame. I mean, doing a Han Solo movie was tougher because we knew the character better, even if we didn't know a lot about the character.

We know more about Jango Fett than Boba Fett and even that wasn't a lot. I think done right, a BF movie would've been cool.

More click-bait. The Variety piece didn't even get Boba Fett's debut correct. For the record, Boba Fett's debut was in the Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978, not TESB in 1980.

For me, this comes as no surprise. Complaints abounded about the Solo movie (i.e. "Nobody asked for this!" "This isn't what the fans wanted!" "Disney doesn't understand what makes Star Wars great!") and then Disney announces a slow down on projects. Hmmm...the mind is a mysterious playground.

Eh, a Boba Fett movie is still a possibility, even if this particular idea isn't being continued. Heck, as a fan from the old EU stuff the last person I want to make a Boba Fett movie is the guy who made the worst X-Men related movie (and I'll stand by Logan being the worst X-Men movie), so in my opinion this is for the best. Either another version will happen eventually, or the books/comics will be allowed to use Boba fett without having to hold off for some theoretical movie.

That said, if they made a Boba fett book it would almost certainly be some YA romance written by Claudia Grey set between Episodes 3 and 4 (and knowing Grey it would be something like: Lost Twilight Stars, a book where Boba Fett falls in love with a alien girl called Bel-Ah whose species drinks blood and sparkles and who also comes from a family that hates mandalorians) but this is the only scenario where that would probably be preferable to whatever this movie would have been. Well, either that or a book for literal 2 year olds about Fett accepting a bounty to hunt the boogeyman under a kids bed, while also teaching them to read. Still, both better then a movie from the guy who shat out Logan.
