How do you rate Black Widow?

It's a movie. It shouldn't need to add to anything.
Fair enough. I'm glad you got more enjoyment out of the movie than I did.

I, for one, think we need more MCU stories like it.
For me personally I don't. It's a bit formulaic to do a standalone superhero movie these days. Marvel's advantage over DC and any other Superhero movie is that it has an interconnected, successful, universe. There was a time when I didn't see every marvel movie at the theater, but now I'm standing outside the theater in cold sweats waiting to get in. I'm curious to know how everyone else feels about it. More standalones or something more interconnected?

Interconnected. Since DC is going towards making things more standalone, I think the smart move for Marvel would be to go in the opposite direction and crossover the characters more, which it looks like we'll be getting with Scarlet Witch in Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Dr. Strange in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the Guardians of the Galaxy in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Yup. Interconnected. Take advantage of all this groundwork already laid and dig into that. It's fun in the comics and the fun translates onto the screen! If we want standalone stories we can watch almost every other movie ever made. Ever.

In theory, all MCU movies are interconnected--but I would like to see a variety of movies/shows dealing with different aspects of the universe. It seems we are getting that with Secret Wars coming up that promises to explore a different story line from the Kang/multiverse stuff--although Secret Wars could possibly lead to the Dark Avengers that is being built.

Just balance it out. Don't make the audience feel like they have to be up to speed on what all has happened. It's a prohibitive barrier to comics and it has become one to the films. I knew nothing about Blade and thoroughly enjoyed that film. Now, it's like, OK who is this and how do they connect to this person? I feel like I'm doing an intake with a new client for personal history than an entertaining film. I bring a pad of paper to construct a family tree to make sure I'm not lost.

I'm all for references, if that is what people mean by interconnected, but let the films be alive on their own, not a full story told across multiple films.

Also, Marvel should keep doing it's own thing and not look to DC at all. That would be the most bass-ackwards way to do stuff.

I completely see your point and why 'Black Widow' appeals to you in this case. I understand that the bigger the MCU becomes the more overwhelming it is. But the success story seems to be that people get into it and then they want to digest everything in it. People want more content. It's a franchise. Obviously the money is in the connected Universe rather than stand alone these days. There have been so many failures for other movie companies that try to do a connected universe but Marvel was a success. I doubt they will throw that away.

I agree. I think that it has worked very well for Marvel and they’d be foolish to change it so long as it works. However, I am also quite excited at the possibilities opened by DC taking the entirely different approach - if we’re going to see 3 different Batmen and maybe 2 or 3 different takes on Superman over the next few years, I am absolutely here for it.

I think there is confusion of wanting more content vs. Interconnected. Of course I want more content, to explore a variety of stories inside this world.

But, I also want a balance of this Interconnected approach. Films should be able to stand on their own, regardless of importance to the overall grand narrative. I love things like Daredevil, even though it meant very little to the films. Standalone isn't they are not apart of the franchise; just that it isn't a constant stacking of layers to try to follow along with.

More????

That's the problem--in the comics, characters once had adventures for long arcs having nothing to do with other characters. They were created as individuals and established their own personal "universe" long before becoming deeply involved with the plots of other books. On the opposite side, the MCU formula is endless Easter eggs and teases to the point no one film has a message and story truly of its own, its dropping bait to reel in audiences to the next film. Rinse and repeat. Outside of a legitimate team film, the individual superhero loses his identity when he's sharing the screen with 15 other characters (major or supporting) who either prevent any depth from the character, or are almost breaking the 4th wall telling audiences that they can buy tickets to the next film as they're sitting in the theater.

They should have let Iron Man in the movie for those who like the connective tissue in the movies. Not that it would make movie better. It would still be just as good which it is good but it would have been a little icing on the cake.

Actually I would have liked to have seen Hawkeye in some form. That would have made more sense for this film. I'm sure the reason they didn't go with iron Man was it would have inflated the budget, and because of iron Man's and Robert Downey Jr.'s status in the MCU <--- that would have overshadowed the 'solo' aspect of the Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow character in her own film.

Actually, they did. Jeremy Renner had an audio cameo during the Budapest flashback.

As for Iron Man, as much as I love him and Downey Jr., I'm glad he wasn't it. I am a little bummed we didn't see Steve step out of the Quinjet at the end but it's not a big deal.
