"My god, Bones, what have I done?"
"What you had to do, what you always do, turn death into a fighting chance to live."

Admiral Kirk & co. self-destructing the Enterprise in Star Trek III is the most dramatic & well done of any space ship destruction I've ever seen.

Although, to tell the truth, since I grew up on The Next Generation, the destruction of the Enterprise-D in Star Trek: Generations had far more emotional impact on me.

"Talyn...starburst!"
I always considered that to be more of a character death. Talyn was a sentient being who voluntarily sacrificed himself as his captain for the greater good. Definitely an emotional scene but I just can't bring it to classify him as a "starship." Even though he technically was.

The Pegasus in nuBSG had a pretty awesome death, taking out two Cylon Base Stars with it.
She took three with her actually. One solely from her guns, another after a collision, and the third post-mortem when part of her hull collided with another.
True. I was only thinking of the two she took out at the very end.

Thanks for posting that video. Some nice editing there to fit it all together, and the music they chose to play over it fits perfectly.

I can see that argument, but he was indeed a starship. Just like Moya. And Doctor Who's TARDIS (which appears to have some sentience). And Babylon 5's Shadow and Vorlon ships. And Futurama's Planet Express. And so on.

I've been rather fond of the multiple-shots from different angles used in "Cause and Effect". :)

Technically speaking, Talyn's death is the only one that qualifies, out of those mentioned so far. Since none of the others were alive to begin with. ;)
Lexx had a good death, I thought, but Pegasus must take top billing, for taking so many toasters with it.

I've got to go with the death of the Enterprise in Star Trek III. It's a beautiful, poignant scene, even in a flawed movie.

Pegasus' death had a lot more going for it, too. It had a son disobeying his father in order to rescue the heart and soul of humanity, it rode in with all guns blazing in a classic calvary scene, the cinematography was great, it was largely unexpected by many viewers, and (as a personal note) it was the first time such a scene ever made me cheer out loud.

This is as opposed to most of Trek's self-destructs which were more often than not just a not-even-last-ditch effort to destroy a single enemy during a non-vital mission. Talyn's death was epic and a tear-jerker for sure, but I can't classify him as a starship in my head anymore than I can call a horse a motorcycle. But if I could, he'd get my second vote without doubt.

The first thing I thought of when I read this thread title was the absolutely beautiful work done by the effects artists for "Starship Troopers". I LOVED that view of the massive warship cut open with all its decks exposed and crewmen flying out into space. Just epic and beautiful.

As someone going to school for VFX, i still look at those shots and go...WOW! I love the effects in that film.

"Talyn...starburst!"

I've only ever caught part of that episode, but it was the first thing that came to mind.

Now that I think about it, though, I also have to consider the destruction of the Resolute on Exosquad ("Tell him Matthew Marcus knew how to die.").

Regardless, my vote is 'Other.'
