I know it's kind of late, we're in mid-Jan already but I haven't seen any comprehensive threads for a best of list covering all the genres for the just finished decade 2000-2009. There was one for horror and pure sci-fi films and I had one of TV shows and super hero films.

So here is your chance to list your favorite films in the following genres. Being that I've posted already my favorites for horror and super hero films, I'll leave them off here but feel free to list them if you have 'em.

Science Fiction films
1. Children of Men
2. Wall-E
3. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
4. Avatar
5. Sunshine
6. Star Trek
7. District 9
8. Serenity
9. A.I.: Artificial Intelligience
10. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Honorable Mentions: War of the Worlds, Terminator: Salvation, 28 Days Later, The Core and 2012 (two really bad great guilty pleasures), Minority Report, I, Robot, I Am Legend, Vanilla Sky, and The Mist. Super hero films that also deserve recognition in this category include the first two Spider-Man and X-Men films, The Incredible Hulk, Superman Returns, The Incredibles, and Watchmen.

Fantasy films
1. King Kong
2. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
3. Pan's Labyrinth
4. Stardust
5. Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
6. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
7. Big Fish
8. Speed Racer
9. Hellboy II: The Golden Army
10. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Animated films
1. Wall-E
2. The Incredibles
3. Kung Fu Panda
4. Up
5. Shrek
6. Lilo and Stitch

8. Finding Nemo
9. Perseopolis
10. Titan A.E.

Honorable Mentions: Brother Bear, Treasure Planet, Madagascar, Ice Age, Cars, Ratatouille, Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens

Is there perhaps a list that shows every major science fiction and fantasy picture released in the past ten years? I could surely come up with a few, which I will in a second, but I know I'll forget more than I remember. Which is only a commentary on my memory.

That said, I believe my favorite three would not change if I had a master list. They are:

Children of Men
Moon
Primer

^^You can try Wikipedia and search under list of science fiction films and they break it down by decades. There are also links for other genres as well.

Good idea. I didn't know wikipedia had a lists of genre films by year (and decade).

A list of movies I think are worth remembering, or might be worth remembering, but I haven't seen.

2001
Donnie Darko
Haven't seen: Metropolis, Vanilla Sky

2002
Solaris

2003
Haven't seen: 2009: Lost Memories, Robot Stories

2004
Primer
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Haven't seen: 2046

2005
(none)

2006
A Scanner Darkly
Children of Men

2007
The Man from Earth
Haven't seen: Timecrimes

2008
(none)

2009
Avatar
Moon
Star Trek
Haven't seen: 9, Pandorum

Honorable Mentions: Idiocracy, District 9, The Fountain

My simple choices for best Sci-Fi/Fantasy genre film by year:

2000: Pitch Black
2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (bloody hell it was hard choosing between that, Spider-Man and Minority Report)
2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (I may be the only one who nearly chose The Matrix Reloaded here)
2004: Spider-Man 2
2005: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
2006: V for Vendetta
2007: Sunshine (the best of what was a bad year for the genre)
2008: The Dark Knight
2009: Star Trek

I already did this a while ago in another thread. So I'll simply repost it. This list is supposed to be "SF only".

2000: X-Men

2001: Oh boy… I have to go with A.I. Artificial Intelligence

2002: Minority Report

2003: X2

2004: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

2005: Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (runner-up: Serenity)

2006: Children of Men (runner-up: V for Vendetta)

2007: I Am Legend

2008: Iron Man (provided we don't count The Dark Knight as SF)

2009: Moon (runner-up: Avatar)

Strongest year in science fiction: 2009 (Avatar, District 9, Moon, Star Trek, and Watchmen)

Weakest year in science fiction: 2001

I don't separate so-called science fiction and fantasy films into two categories; my favorite skiffy film of the decade so far would be Avatar.

Favorite animated film...is tough but I'll go with The Incredibles edging out Wall-E.

Favorite skiffy TV series would be Buffy The Vampire Slayer, followed by Farscape.

Science Fiction films
1. Star Trek
2. I Am Legend
3. Moon
4. District 9
5. Sunshine
6. Children of Men
7. Serenity
8. A.I.: Artificial Intelligience
9. Evolution
10. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

The order is by release.

Sci fi on film:
2046
A Scanner Darkly
Moon

TV:
Farscape
Battlestar Galactica
Charlie Jade

Fantasy films:
Lord of the Rings (Trilogy)
Pan's Labyrinth

And a nod to Abrams' Star Trek for being the most satisfying geek experience of the decade.

2000: X-Men (What a bad year)

2001: (You know I never saw Donnie Darko)

2002: Attack of the Clones (I wasn't happy with Minority Report's ending or 28 Days Later's last 1/3, yet I can pass Episode 2 because...I dunno why.)

2003: X2 (Do I even like sci-fi movies?)

2004: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

2005: The Island

2006: V for Vendetta

2007: I Am Legend (Mainly because AVPR was incompetently directed)

2008: Doomsday

2009: Watchmen

Really, the best sci-fi movie of the last decade was The Prestige, I guess it falls under fantasy.

^
The Prestige is sci-fi, because the fantastic element originates from the inventions of Nikolai Tesla.

Also if it's the best of the decade why didn't it win in its year?

Here are my favorite science-fiction/fantasy movies of the last decade.

(I am not sure what category superhero movies are in but they will be on my list also)

In no particular order.

1. Star Trek
2. Avatar
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
5. The Lord of the Rings:Return of the King
6. I Robot
7. The Dark Night
8. Cloverfield
9. Batman Begins
10. Superman Returns
11. King Kong
12. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
13. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
14. The Incredibles
15. X-Men

2001: (You know I never saw Donnie Darko)
That's a shame. Best sci-fi movie I've seen between 2000 and 2009 by far (haven't seen "Moon" or "District 9"), and the one time in all that period that I believe Internet hype was justified.

2003: X2 (Do I even like sci-fi movies?)

I hope that's not a disparaging remark about my favourite movie of the 2000s, the best sci-fi movie of the 2000s, and the greatest superhero/comic book movie of all-time. :D

Pretty rotten decade for sci-fi and animation. I haven't enjoyed any of the Pixar movies completely since "Monsters Inc." (haven't seen "Up" yet), and all the major sci-fi films I saw were pretty damn flawed too. "Donnie Darko" and "X2" are the only movies I've seen in this thread that I thought were truly excellent. I also liked "Minority Report" only till the end.
