I like the idea of "Sabotage" being a tribute to Shatner's mispronunciation of the word. Is there anything actually confirming that or is it all speculation at this point?

Well... it gave me an excuse to post the Sabotage vid Found it a few days ago..

It shows that the spirit of rebellion and rock'n'roll is still alive in the 23rd century. At least in this version of it. Earth and the Federation had become too sanitized and mamby-pamby by the last 20 years of Trek.

Love young Jimmy screaming "Whoaaaaarrr!!!"

I like that they finally acknowledged music besides classical, jazz, opera and musicals, and the occasional ethnic music (earth and non).

I'm glad they acknowledged ROCK.

More, please.

About fraggin time we got something with some punch in Trek. All dem namby pamby Feddys listened to was old Jazz, Classical music, and Opera.

Really. I liked the scene and it fit the moment.

I don't have any memory of what the music sounded like, it was just there. Don't know the song by name either....then again, there aren't many songs which I *do* know by name!

Next time I see the film maybe I'll pay more attention to that scene.

Ok I have'nt seen it yet but I saw a snippet of the chase scene in the begiining, did Abrams really use the Beastie Boys in a Trek Film? Geez nothing screams 24th century more that that, instead of Sabotage I would've preferred No Sleep to Brooklyn it's a personal fave.

Well at least the Beastie Boys are chronologically closer to the 24th century than let's say...that Berlioz Picard was hearing in First Contact.

Or are people in the future Trek universe only allowed to listen to old music when it's classical, opera, jazz etc etc ?

I guess it's appropriate if one associates, Jazz and Opera with Deep serious thought, and Rap with getting one stoned to the bejeezus, yes I guess it fits the new Mindless atitude of Trek.

Intergalactic is another good one.

I've only seen the movie once, so I might have missed it... but just out of curiosity, did they use a censored version of the song or is this the first instance of the word 'f**k' or any of its variants in the Star Trek universe? Another first???

No, the lyrics say "Fuck" in them IN the movie. I remember hearing it my third viewing, thinking "Wow, how did they get away with that?"

I got a kick out of the idea of Jimmy Kirk listening to a Beastie Boys "classic rock" track.

It became a problem for me the moment it didn't fade away as the car fell into the quarry. Having Jimmy Kirk rockin' out was one thing... having it as part of the soundtrack is another.

Brands may very well survive for centuries though. Probably not all brands, but the ones who are very strong, like Bud and Nokia, might make it. As for the song, that's less of a brand and more of a cultural thing. I don't find it likely that any youth would be listening to the Beastie Boys in 200 years. In fact, I've never really found anyone's taste in music in Trek to be all that realistic. I wish they'd try and make something that is supposed to be contemporary for the time so that we could all laugh at it in 20 years.
