Beastie Boys in Trek XI

Re: Beastie Boys in a Trek Flick?

I loved the inclusion of the Beastie Boys track. If one hadn't noticed, it was a clear marker that the movie unfolding wasn't the Trek that came before.

This is the one and only reason that I thought it was appropriate. If you had asked me before this movie, I would've scoffed at that. But it was a real "holy shit, this really ISN'T your father's trek" moment for me when that scene came on.

Even if it was a cheesy and somewhat pointless scene.

Re: Beastie Boys in a Trek Flick?

It shows that the spirit of rebellion and rock'n'roll is still alive in the 23rd century. At least in this version of it. Earth and the Federation had become too sanitized and mamby-pamby by the last 20 years of Trek.

Love young Jimmy screaming "Whoaaaaarrr!!!" :techman:

Re: Beastie Boys in a Trek Flick?

Well what says future badass biker cowboy captain than SABOTAGE!?

About fraggin time we got something with some punch in Trek. All dem namby pamby Feddys listened to was old Jazz, Classical music, and Opera. C'mon who besides Tom Paris - and all he listened to was old 50s stuff - actually listened to stuff made in the latter 20th Century?

Re: Beastie Boys in a Trek Flick?

Ok I have'nt seen it yet but I saw a snippet of the chase scene in the begiining, did Abrams really use the Beastie Boys in a Trek Film? Geez nothing screams 24th century more that that, instead of Sabotage I would've preferred No Sleep to Brooklyn it's a personal fave.

Well at least the Beastie Boys are chronologically closer to the 24th century than let's say...that Berlioz Picard was hearing in First Contact. :p

Or are people in the future Trek universe only allowed to listen to old music when it's classical, opera, jazz etc etc ?

Well it's only the 23rd century ;).

And I thought it worked. Young Kirk turns it on in the VINTAGE car. Obviously you're going to fill a vintage car with vintage music ;)

24th century ? You were expecting young James to be listening to music that hadn't been written yet ?

Exactly why should popular music from the 20th century not be listened to in the 23rd ? Or is it just that you don't like Beastie Boys ?

Re: Beastie Boys in a Trek Flick?

I'm glad that they used it. It's stupid, because unless they try to invent some "new" form of music - probably something in like Esperanto or something - which would sound stupid, they're really stuck using what would be considered ancient Earth classics or our contemporary music.
Star Trek has always shied away from using any pop-culture references later than like the 1950s - if it's not old songs, then it's old movies. It's like Trip being obsessed with movies from the 50s/60s, seemingly ignoring the greatness that was the 70s/80s/90s.

Not that I necessarily like this particular song... I'm just glad they broke that Star Trek culture "taboo", as it were.

Re: Beastie Boys in a Trek Flick?

My only problem with the Beastie Boys is the way it was handled made it seem like it was part of the soundtrack, not coming from the car (it should have faded away as the car fell and it didn't seem to do so). It was more jarring compared to the rest of the soundtrack than anything else. Sabotage is as good as anything for a young Kirk to rebel by listening to.

Of course, now I have to wonder why he pronounced it sa-bo-tadge if he had a song to help him learn the correct way to say it ;)

I'm sure you would have preferred them to be listening to 18th century opera like Picard then eh?

Re: Beastie Boys in a Trek Flick?

I don't remember where I read it, but it's my understanding that they didn't use more contemporary music was because of having to pay royalties to the artists, the music they used was in the public domain.

Just a money issue, it seems.

Re: Beastie Boys in a Trek Flick?

Well you kind of have to recognise the track. I didn't, put it that way, so I just got the effect of the music as music - and it worked fine. I'm still not sure which piece it was anyway

Are you very young? I thought EVERYBODY knew that song.

Thats what I thought. I was with someone yesterday who didn't recognise it which shocked me

I could see where some people would find it a little odd hearing something more... modern in a Trek film, but I think thats one of the reasons I liked it. It was nice hearing something different.

Indeed - the same reason anytime anyone was into literature, it was either old (i.e. public domain old) or made up. No-one was into Tom Clancy ;)

Found this on another board, but it definitely belongs here:

:D

I like the idea of "Sabotage" being a tribute to Shatner's mispronunciation of the word. Is there anything actually confirming that or is it all speculation at this point?

EDIT: Fixed the link.

What I liked about it was that it indicated that people in the future aren't so perfect that they only listen to classical or new orleans jazz. Rock music still exists.

I was fine with the use of the song too. I have no problem with modern music being used in Trek as long as it fits in well with the scene. Which I thought it did.

I've only seen the movie once, so I might have missed it... but just out of curiosity, did they use a censored version of the song or is this the first instance of the word 'f**k' or any of its variants in the Star Trek universe? Another first???
