Battling apathy

I'm fairly certain that if Star Trek novels were no longer profitable, they would have reduced the publishing schedule to something much less than 12 MMPBs a year and/or canceled the line alltogether. That we still get 12 books a year to me indicates that sales are still profitable even if S&S has been having other problems.

Possible. There are probably a ton of dynamics involved that we have no idea about. I just find the lack of shelf space and rotating editor position troubling. YMMV.

Indeed. I think it was Marco who often pointed out that, compared to most media tie-in book series, 12 MMPBs and several trade PBs per year is an exceptionally prolific publishing schedule. And remember, for the first 7-8 years of Pocket's Trek publishing program, it put out no more than 6 books a year.

Even Star Wars, so successful, only put out 9 adult fiction novels this year, and that includes all of the Clone Wars and games novels, which are contracted separately.

Once again, the lack of shelf space merely reflects the fact that a lot of Trek buyers purchase their books online. It doesn't mean people aren't buying the books, it simply means they're buying them from different places.

And there's no reason for concern about the latest change in editors. Jaime Costas wasn't laid off or fired or anything; she chose to leave for reasons of her own. So it's unrelated to the circumstances that led to Marco's and Margaret's layoffs (which were part of broader companywide layoffs due to the economic crisis).

I just find the lack of shelf space...

Depends on where you are. As I said before, when JJ Abrams' ST movie was imminent, Australian bookshop shelves demoted "Star Wars" in favour of "Star Trek" - I posted photos here showing how ST was again outnumbering SW in numerous shops across Australia.

Now, once again, "Doctor Who", "The Clone Wars" and "Twilight" are predominent. What franchises have series/movies currently/recently in production? "Doctor Who", "The Clone Wars" and "Twilight".

It's cyclic.

and rotating editor position troubling.
In the 80s we rarely knew such intimate details, although looking back on the roster, it went from Hartwell to Panitch to Stern in fairly quick succession. Dave Stern was with the line for quite a while, and it leveled out with Ryan and a lengthy stint by Ordover. That the book line had a stability of editorship during the most visible success of the parent series is probably not coincidence. Ditto the two-books-per-month schedule.

Again, it's cyclic.

AFAIK at least Costas left on her own terms to have more time for her baby, so the viability of the line had nothing to do with it. But I certainly hope that the current editor stays on the job long enough to accompany some projects from start to finish ( I doubt that that was the case with Costas.)

Hi folks,

There was a post a few pages back I can't seem to quote...every time I try to the site tells me I'm not logged in...weird...but anyway, it was a longish post about the books in general but at the end the poster made a comment about thinking well of Voyager but not wanting to read them.

I'm a little confused and would really appreciate it of the original poster would clarify...you haven't read the books but think well of them? You have read them and think well of them but don't plan to continue reading them because they are too much like and unlike Voyager?

Just curious.

And, in general, sad to hear about the waning enthusiasm, though, of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I know Children of the Storm is a ways off yet, but now that it's all but done I have to say I'm excited about how this one turned out and looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

Best,
Kirsten

^ Been a while since you posted; nice to see you around.

I think a lot of us are looking forward to Children Of The Storm. I know I am.

I'm currently reading Seize the Fire and I'm not getting the hate for it...yet. It's nothing amazing but I'm enjoying what I'm reading so far.

Hello there...nice to see you too. Hope you are well.

I've been around...not doing much participating as I've been pretty busy writing and every second the baby sleeps so I can work is at a premium. :)

I think a lot of us are looking forward to Children Of The Storm. I know I am.

Thanks. That's really nice to hear.

^ Oh, I think it's pretty universally agreed, as much as anything can be around here, that your prior two Voyager novels were the surprise hits of the 2009 schedule.

Have any annoyingly nebulous hints to drop, or is that just David R. George III's territory?

Hey Kirsten, nice to hear from you.

Historically, I was never much of a Voyager fan to be honest.

About 3 years ago, I re-watched the entire Voyager television series in about 2 weeks. (I'd finished my thesis months before my deadline and was just bored waiting to graduate)

To be completely honest, What I discovered was that if you cut out about a third of the overall episodes, Voyager becomes a nice tight little sci-fi show. (with a few forgivable flaws) Also, the previous pacing issues I'd had went right out the window as it condensed 7 years into 2 weeks. lol.

After that re-watch I saw more potential in it as a series than I'd been cognizant of originally.

Especially with characters like Neelix. (a Rogue hiding in plain sight) He's such a nice guy you tend to forget the kind of people he used to run with, the kind of jobs he used to pull to survive, the kind of things he's capable of, and the pain he hides behind a smile as a result it all. You can't take Neelix at face value.

Anyways, as a result of this reappraisal, I approached the new Voyager books with fresh eyes and I was impressed with how things were developing. Both Full Circle and Unworthy were fantastic!

Despite some waning enthusiasm, I'd have to say that your next book is currently one of the current few that I'm actually anticipating.

Thanks again.

Speaking of Relaunches causing apathy...

I think the DS9 relaunch (being the first one) set the bar too high for the other relaunches. DS9's relaunch was very strong in quality and quantity in its beginning.

...

All of that happening and none of it living up to the perceived greatness of the DS9 relaunch's initial run, I can see where a distinct lack of enthusiasm would result.

I do think there is some truth to that. I didn't read Trek Lit until I discovered the DS9-R and pretty much devoured those books. Now that the DS9-R has crumbled, my interest has most certainly waned, though I keep an eye on what is being published. Sometimes I buy a title or two that I have little interest in actually reading to support the overall endeavor.

I don't know if DS9 "season 8" set the bar too high exactly, but anyway it had a great balance of characterization, a sense of momentum and immersion in the existing universe, a feeling of familiarity while at the same time generating excitement about what was to come. Ambitious, but not overly so. The stories felt important, but the scale stayed relatively small, with no sense that a gigantic apocalyptic catastrophe had to be shoe-horned in to generate interest. It was a very effective formula, though it proved to be unsustainable.

I've only read up to Fearful Symmetry, though I've also read Destiny. I rather hope Shar and Taran'atar show up again at some point.

If a non-spoiler-laden answer could be provided that would be kind of cool. I suspect the answer is we just haven't heard anything. I definitely don't want to know if one or both of them die at some point in one of the books...I'll get to it when I get to it.

Yeah, I've been wondering if she was even there long enough to actually get anything started.

The cover of Typhon Pact: Paths of Disharmony answers the question about one of those two characters.

For Shar it's really not a spoiler since he's featured on the cover of the upcoming Paths of Disharmony. Taran'atar appears in the next DS9 novel, The Soul Key

I'm not reading that many Star Trek novels anyway. Mostly the "must read" stuff or books that were generally recommended, like the Destiny trilogy or Vanguard. I'm not even bothering myself with the "lesser" stuff though. The most recent reads were mostly by David Mack, followed by Keith R.A. DeCandido, Dayton Ward/Kevin Dilmore, and a little bit of Christopher L. Bennett. I guess I'm totally unfamiliar with any of the other current authors.
