Baseball 2026: RIP Mr Laser Beam

Buck Martinez, 77, retires as Blue Jays broadcaster. He had done over 4000 games since 1987. He also played catcher for the Blue Jays from 1981-86 at the end of his career, and was even their manager for 2001 and part of 2002.
Honestly, should have happened years ago. Not hating on the guy, but he was not as sharp as he had once been. Sportsnet tried to make him a play by play guy for a few years and while he wasn't brutal, he was always the better colour/analyst, especially more so than his partner in those years, Pat Tabler. Since Dan Shulman returned full time and Buck moved back over to the analyst seat, it has felt like a balanced broadcast.

Terrance Gore, 34, passed away from complications during a routine surgery. Which shows you that there's never anything routine about surgery. He won a World Series in 2015 with the Royals, 2020 with the Dodgers and 2021 with the Braves.

Astros sign Cavan Biggio to a minor league contract, son of Astros hall of famer Craig Biggio. Basically a fringe major leaguer who could never recreate his rookie season. I wonder how much pressure he felt to succeed, first as the son of a hall of famer, then to come up with the Blue Jays at the same time as two other sons of superstars and they went on to have great success.

Twins ace Pablo Lopez suffers a significant tear in his right UCL during the team's first full-squad workout, likely Tommy John so done for the season.

Tony Clark resigns as MLBPA executive director over an inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law, who was hired by the union in 2023. The union has been doing an internal probe over finances and other improprieties when the relationship came to light.
