Bajorian and Star-Fleet Communicators...

Does anyone know how compatible Bajorian and Star Fleet communicators were, I don't recall any problems in any episode, however, one would think that the engineers would have to have modified one or both that communications would be possible between the two types.

Going further, how did Klingon, Cardissian, Romulan, Dominion, Ferengi, Breen...ect communicators compair with Star-Fleet issue communicators...

It kind of seemed like the Bajoran and Starfleet communicators were rigged to be compatible with each other as well as working with station computers. I don't know whether other political entities ever patched into Starfleet systems with their setups or not.

In "Indiscretion," was Dukat ever shown using his wristcomm to contact the runabout, or anything like that? That might be a place to look.

What I wonder about is how Bajor and the Federation both went for communicators that were chest badges. I mean, that's far from an obvious solution ergonomically, let alone technologically.

It could well be that Bajorans, post-occupation, actually bought their hardware from the same vendor that supplied Starfleet, simply customized in shape. Compatibility would be a non-issue, then: the supplier would no doubt have arranged for a simple software solution for that.

But then again, all commtech in use by these advanced spacefarers is probably flexible in operation, and can be programmed to interface with any alien comm system. It would simply be a subfunction of the mode where the badges work as translation devices.

For all we know, the Bajoran communicators could have been Federation technology.

I doubt that the Bajorans were using such communicators during the occupation and after the occupation there were not exactly in shape to produce such high-tech products on their own. In fact, Bajor probably started to receive help from the Federation very shortly after the Cardassians left. And at the time the Bajoran government and the military was formed it was probably forseeable that they were going to work closely with Starfleet.

Indeed. We saw few glimpses to Bajoran equipment during the occupation. Mainly, we saw the hardware of the Resistance, gathered from here and there, as preserved for use in "Shakaar"; it involved weapons of Klingon and apparent Romulan design, in addition to Cardassian loot. But the commbadges wouldn't be loot. They would either be something the militia purchased right after the occupation ended, or something the collaborationist Bajoran military or police forces used during the occupation. And somehow I doubt the collabo police would have been allowed to use commbadges with Bajoran religious symbols on them...

I would imagine they have frequency settings, and you'd just need to align them to the same one.

That could be like asking how do Canadian and American telephones interact with each other?

On a related note, what happens to Odo's communicator when he turns back into jello?

It was alwys my estimate that it doesn't turn into jello, but that it swims somewhere in Odo's jello while he's in his liquid state. Alright, that doesn't explain why the communicator doesn't get lost when he's in the Great Link. I guess he keeps his jello on it even when he's in the Link.

Even though its not canon I believe in the Millennium novels of the DS9 series that it said Odo's communicator was also a replica.
