Babylon 5

That Lockley was once married to Sheridan pushed things a little too much into soap opera territory though, perhaps?

Somebody mentioned back then that he'd been working his way through the Minbari caste system (Lochley as warrior, Anna as worker and Delenn as Religious).

In season 5, Sheridan's seat in the Council Chamber had an "Earth Alliance" placard in front of it, suggesting that he actually was Earth's representative to the ISA (he also dealt directly with the Earth president whenever Earth Stuff came up). Apparently, free gravity drives and high-yield beam-weapons really bought a lot of forgiveness from Earth. They also probably didn't mind that it meant their seat was top-dog. We never really find out exactly how the ISA presidency works, but it seems to be more like a Prime Minister, with one of the representatives elected by the others to be in charge, which I suppose would entail setting the legislative agenda and serving as commander-in-chief of the military (though that part also seems up in the air, since we never really saw if the President or Ranger One had the final word if they disagreed on what to do with the ISA's armed forces).

They mentioned early on in season 5 that the ISA was planning to formally buy Babylon 5 from Earth. They never said it went through, but apparently, it did, since the station was sold or ceeded back to Earth a couple years before it was dismantled. In that case, since B5 wouldn't be a member state, they wouldn't need a representative on the council.

I also thought that at the time. Also seemed a bit like he was playing Goldilocks. Maybe Lochley should have been thankful he only divorced her rather than nuking her.

I'm going to question about where you think that the power sits.
Well, Sheridan was president of the Alliance. He appointed Lochley to be his successor on B5.

I doubt that Lochley got Earth's vote in the ISA, since she was basically on Holiday from her Earth Force duties to manage a foreign nation, so she was compromised.
I didn't mean that she was literally an ambassador, just a representative of the side that fought against B5's independence and, by extension, the Alliance that resulted from B5's victory. Her high-profile presence was Sheridan's statement to the galaxy that the past was the past.

Sheridan was able to appoint his exwife, because he was still the Military Governor of Babylon 5, unless he was stripped of that position while he was captured by Earth, gods forbids that they tortured working command codes off him.

Some of the official supplementary material that was released at the time mentioned (and I think named) an EA Ambassador to the ISA at B5. Why that character never showed up, I'm not sure. Maybe she was planned but when CC dipped out they combined her character with Lochley since most of Ivanova's story was shifted across to Lyta.

For the past year my husband has been begging me to give Babylon 5 a go because he loves it so much. I gave in last week.

The Gathering is a giant piece of crap and nearly put me off but I’m in the middle of the first season and it’s kept my interest. I really like Londo!

You just know that now you're tempting me to pull out my B5 dvd's don't you?

I don't think I have the purchased vhs versions anymore (and our vcr's are dodgy at the moment) but the dvd version of The Gathering I have doesn't mention the composer on the case.
I'll have to replay that to see at some point.

I watched the Gathering a week ago, on a new format.

The only difference I really noticed is that Londo did not call Del Varner the most dangerous man in the Galaxy, and they said "a dream given form" twice to full in the empty space. They did repeat a line, might not have been that one.

Although it is entirely set in a different universe because Morden is working in C&C, which is %%%king spooky.

Wait until you get to season two, you'll be hooked.
(Pay close attention to Season one and, yes, The Gathering - there's a lot balls being thrown up into the air that take awhile to come back down.

May I ask why you disliked The Gathering?

I think maybe I was best off getting hooked on the show via S2, then backtracking. Though I never saw -all- the S1 episodes until I showed the series to a friend, because some of them are just...regrettable.

@Trinity Gingerbread, I thought the acting was very stiff and the plot bored me.

I can see why people would think that. Season 1 had a lot of stiff acting, and that story had a lot of stuff that you had to keep watching to see make sense later on. They were building too many clues for later things.

I did like that episode where the biological weapons were found, like technology made of living parts it was a neat idea but executed with a very ham fisted message.

The first truly great episode is Signs and Portents, S1 E13. S1 has some dumb episodes, but once things get going in season 2 there is no going back. There are so many "Oh, man!" moments going forward. Just wait until you get to "Comes the Inquisitor."

I’d say the worst episode so far is “Believers.”
I've always had a weird kind of respect for that episode. Mostly because it felt very much like an episode of TNG (which IIRC was still on the air at the time), only for the third act to go somewhere Trek wouldn't have dared even consider.
Doesn't make it a good episode, but I always appreciate an attempt to push the envelope.

I enjoyed Season 1 when I watched it, but it is definitely a lot rougher than the later seasons. Once it really gets going in Season 2 it's great and doesn't let up until the end of Season 4. Things slow down a bit in Season 5, but there is still a lot to enjoy there.
