Axanar dropped a plot spoiler about a month ago

And ultimately, what I'm worried about is the backlash IF CBS does pull the plug on Axanar. These people are in so deep, they may do something stupid. Maybe I'm being dramatic, but that's the mindset I see from these people.

An interesting hypothetical question would be 'IF' CBS pulled the plug, would Alec have to give the money back to the donors? Only for Axanar not for Prelude since that's a finished product. My guess would be that if CBS tells them they can't do the film. Alec would try to turn Axanar into a non-Star Trek project and try to convince the donors to let him keep the money for that. Either way, it would be a shit storm.

That is a very interesting question. Also, one thing I've noted about the production is: if fans aren't happy, the crew says they will give the money back. But, that's their mindset now. They're probably not set on a couple hundred thousand upset Trek fans. IF that did happen, I agree, it would be messy. Lawsuits, death threats, and everything they built would come crumbling down.

I have watched it a few times. I don't have an account, and am pretty certain I watched it at a few different places (uni, home, the 4g on my phone, the Apple TV with the VPN on etc) Youtube would nearly have to count at least some of those viewings as multiple watches.

Mind you, I watched Hannibal repeatedly as well. The difference is I buy that on DVD, so unfortunately for the shows ratings it only counts the once (or twice for two seasons).

Not quite sure how Indigogo works, but Kickstarter is "buyer be aware" environment, where there is always the risk of the project not actually being completed.

With that said, They no longer have half the money they have raised, and I am sure, they have begun spending the half a mill they received from Indigogo....

What I found interesting ws that Alec in the podcast said he already made certain overtures to the Renegade team about shooting Renegades at Ares Studios....

Yeah, I caught that too.

There was a whole lot of namedropping going on. "I just spent a half an hour talking to James Cawley on the phone yesterday." "I just had lunch with the people at CBS two weeks ago." It just came off as trying to impress your fanbase. And that's great that Alec has so many connections. But hey, work on the movie too. :p (I know he is. It's a joke.)

So then really, comparing Hannibal to Prelude in regards to viewership is like apples and oranges. A better (but not perfect) comparison would be a movie in the theater. In that regard, 1.5 million views is really not that impressive at all when you take into consideration that STID sold an estimated 27.3 million tickets.

YouTube only counts views, not viewers.

So if I watched it five times, it would count it five times towards the total?

Actually it was "Top people at CBS" which is wayyyyy better. ;)

I just don't know how you can go from spending some time ripping on Renegades for calling themselves a pilot, and then turn around and ask them to rent your space... Just doesn't make sense to me.

Because the Axanar people are trying to build a studio that will serve as the location for future "Trek" projects and other sci-fi projects. So eventually people like Tom may be a customer, although right now they are - sort of - a competitor.

I can see it now

Come to Ares Studios - the home of "True Trek". Our consultants can help you create the perfect Kickstarter campaign, put you in touch with "superfans" that will gladly promote your product for free on social media (just don't argue with them when they hate on nuTrek) and you can use our custom build bridge set that looks slightly different from any Trek bridge. We can also help you learn how to skirt around the edges so that CBS doesn't drop the banhammer. Ares Studios, where all crowd funded careers begin!

It seems the productions have had a good relationship disregarding all the "What is Renegades really?" stuff. I don't think it's uncalled for to have those discussions. But if I were Sky Conway, I would probably consider it carefully.

Now, has Peters ever actually called his stuff "True Trek?"

Edit: Sorry for the double post. Accident.

Maybe they could get their own crowd funding platform.... and sell the whole thing from top to bottom......

I would not be surprised to hear that is in the works. That was exactly what I thought when I heard them describe Ares Digital.

The problem is, with more and more productions moving to Vancouver, who is gonna shoot at something like Ares? I don't see them attracting a lot of mainstream shoots, primarily fan films, maybe small independent features.. but even then those independent features would have to have much more viable cost options elsewhere....

I bet if someone had a check in hand, Peters would be more than happy to rent his "studio" to someone making an Abrams Trek project.

There still is a lot shooting in L.A. But the television/film market has boomed tremendously. I think I read there are 400 scripted television products on the air in 2015. I don't know how much studio space there is in L.A. but I can imagine because of there being so much more content produced these days, they can charge whatever they want. That's one of the reasons why more productions are shooting in Atlanta and Toronto. It's just plain cheaper.

Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't Ares more geared towards smaller independent and fan productions? 13,000 square feet is a decent studio space. I just hope it'll be affordable for those productions if their desire is to look out for the little guy.

In that regard, 1.5 million views is really not that impressive at all when you take into consideration that STID sold an estimated 27.3 million tickets.

Keep in mind that "Prelude to Axanar (Official)" has had 1.45 million views worldwide since it was published on 8/15/2014. The ticket sales you have for Star Trek Into Darkness are for domestic theatrical exhibition only -- they're not worldwide figures. Also, the movie hasn't been in release for 13 months like "Prelude to Axanar" has.

The figures for Hannibal's viewership first-run on NBC are even less valuable. How many people watched a re-run? How many people streamed it? How many people watched it outside of the United States? None of these things would factor heavily into NBC's decision to cancel the show, but they do factor heavily if you're trying to compare worldwide audience size.

1.5 million views on YouTube is nothing to sneeze at -- in terms of YouTube -- but Axanar comparing their audience to something like Hannibal is laughable, and betrays a real lack of perspective. What they're selling (err, taking donations for) is a niche product that appeals to a small and aging fan base.
