"Avatar" Blu-ray/DVD thread

Dip 1 will be the vanilla version. The red/blue glasses version will be in dip 2. Dip 3 will be the extended edition with documentaries.
To some extent I agree with Great Mambo Chicken.
They know 2010 will be the year they will make a good profit on this Avatar property so putting one version (bare bones) out in May and one in November/December is the way to go.
The eventual Avatar Blu-ray 3-D version will use HDMI ver. 1.4 spec to deliver 3-D content to the new HD televisions. State of the Art technology to help sell 3-D HDTVs.
Look at it like the Lord of the Rings DVDs with the multiple versions.

If you'll excuse my posting immediately after my own post, something just occurred to me. The DVD and Blu-Ray of Avatar is being released on June 30th? That's a Wednesday. Aren't DVDs and Blu-Rays usually released on Tuesdays?

Not only has Cameron said that he has ideas for sequels but that he left scenes in the first film that will lead to sequels when they're made. As I mentioned in the Avatar film review thread he also is planning on writing a novel that may be out by the end of the year that will explore story ideas that weren't in the thread (such as Earth, the war that Jake fought in) and there are other expanded universe works planned.

Avatar 2 has probably already been "underway" for some time now since Cameron has said he kind of knows what to do. I think we won't see a sequel for another two or three years. He might make Battle Angel Attila in between but who knows.

Admiral_Young first mentioned it

and now
20th Century Fox is about to officially announce the DVD and Blu-ray release of James Cameron's Avatar on 4/22.
...with only the movie and a relatively simple menu function, a move made to exploit every bit of disc space for the top-of-the-line audio and video presentation of the film, according to the movie's producer, Jon Landau.
A source at Fox said the "shelf" prices at many retailers will be closer to $19.99 for the DVD and $29.99 for the Blu-ray.

Wow that's a lot for a bare-bones DVD ($20.) without any extras. This ain't no Sony Superbit DVD circa 1999. It's almost Paramount pricing for a Star Trek home video product when they know they are going to get fans to double dip for a 3-D Blu-ray edition for forthcoming 3-D HDTVs within 2 years or at least a special edition with loads of special features.

I think he should make a film about Rapture (as in Bioshock). Somebody tell him.

wow and not only the Spring 2010 release there may be a cinema re-release in late Summer 2010!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Cameron is in discussions with Fox to work out a re-release of the film, possibly with additional scenes that were cut from the original. In New York on Thursday, Imax’s chief executive, Richard L. Gelfond, said that Mr. Cameron had about 40 minutes of extra material. Only about 10 minutes of film could be added, though, to keep under the 170-minute maximum length a movie can be released in analog Imax theaters.

Fox of course continues to deny plans for Blu-ray 3D but we have heard from a retailer source that "Q4" is when they were told to expect Avatar on Blu-ray 3D.

rereleasing "Avatar," primarily in 3D theaters, in late summer

3-D Blu-ray?
Fox studio sources indicate that is unlikely. They believe there won't be enough of an installed base of 3D TV sets to make that worthwhile and said it is more likely to come next year.

April 22? A Thursday? What the hell is so special about Avatar that it keeps missing the traditional Tuesday release slot?

They want to time it with Earth Day...and April 22 is not a new date for the release that has been the plan for the bare bones version for the past month or so. As Jefferiestube8 stated and linked this has been the plan for some time. I am not real thrilled with the price. I will probably just rent it and wait for the ultimate edition probably around Christmas. The fact that a re-release in theaters is planned now makes me think that the original plan for a June release isn't going to happen and the Blu-Ray 3D/"Ultimate Edition" (this is what I'm calling the special edition) will be out in time for massive Christmas sales.

Oh right, because Avatar is supposed to have some kind of deep environmental message? Silly me, I just thought it was some random sci-fi action that serves as the catalyst of the new 3-D fad that is changing the face of the movie business.

Who cares why they decided to do that? I don't see why you felt the need to bring that particular point out. You asked why they were releasing it on a Thursday instead of the regular Tues, I explained. I don't think it was necessary for a snide comment.

Avatar DVD/BR double-dip on the way

They've announced that Avatar will be released to BR/DVD on Earth Day (which I think is around April 20.

BUT ...

- It's vanilla, meaning no extra features (allegedly so more space can be taken up with picture and sound quality).
- It's only the 2-D version.

If that isn't the most obvious indication of a double-dip coming soon, I don't know what is. Especially since it was already reported that Cameron's planning to release a home video version with extra scenes including the much-talked-about love scene that was cut because he didn't want an R rating.

As I've stated elsewhere I'm not interested in the 3-D version anyway, so the fact they're going whole hog on the 2-D version for home is great. But I'm still going to pass because if I do buy this I'm going to want the one with the whole enchilada.

How much you wanna bet they're planning to launch the full version alongside some 3-D TV hardware? Considering Cameron spoke at the launch of one of these systems a few days ago, that doesn't sound too far-fetched.
