Actually they have complete access to AoD, the only film that they can use the entirety of other than Evil Dead 2 for the most part.
Evil Dead 1 they have to ask permission for every little thing from it, probably why the inclusion of material from it in the trailers and early episodes is so scarce and edited. The reboot used all of two audio tracks from the first film, I can't remember how much it cost but at ~1.5 minutes of audio it was ridiculous.
But it's tone is so different they just don't like using it. That and time travel opens up all sorts of weird problems for them.
Episode 8 Ash is acting like it never happened, Episode 9 he's cracking jokes about it, I think they just like to mess with the fans over it's status, like TAS.
