Ash vs Evil Dead (new tv series)

I have not watched Spartacus. Too much violence and gore for my liking. I know AvED has plenty but it's done in a comedic way, so it doesn't bother me.

It's very stylized though, not unlike AvED in its way, and done by a lot of the same people. If you can get pass that there's a lot of great soap opera bonds, betrayals, romances and sensuality.

Maybe one day I'll try it but there's also the nudity factor. I'm fine with seeing graphic sex on tv but after watching a couple "naked" shows, I'm kind of put off by it. It's almost like tv producers use it as a gimmick to rake in the numbers rather than it adding anything to the plot.

Well, if nudity is a factor, DO NOT watch Spartacus. :) I think every single person in Spartacus ends up naked at some point or another, and generally quite so.

There's a lot of blood, a lot of sex and a lot of nudity not related to sex.

Still, its an absolutely riveting show full of twists and turns and it challenges you to ask several questions... what would you do for love? For power? For honor? For loyalty?

I've seen a few clips of it. It reminds me of GOT. Two years ago I watched the first three episodes and was like "No thank you!"

What a great episode, the show just gets better and better, everyone got something to do, not enough Lucy but I liked what we got ;)...

I think the show has made a nice progression as it's gone along. The journey feels like it's moved from start to finish without feeling rushed or stalling along the way.

We'd probably have seen more of Lucy Lawless in an hour-long show but there isn't a lot of room for cut-aways to b-plots.

I like these "little glimpses" of Ruby. It makes the "half hour show" more suspenseful than I would normally expect.

I don't watch Spartacus either. I can tolerate violence, I quite enjoy nudity, and I love period pieces, but Spartacus never appealed to me-- the characters, the approach, the ambiance, something in its construction just bores me. I do like Game Of Thrones, but I couldn't even manage to focus on a single episode of Spartacus.

Wow, already? And I won't have time to watch until I get home this afternoon. Aargh. :scream:

By "great," I assume you mean "lots of Fisher." :D

Lots of Fisher... lots of Pablo & Kelly... and a Phoenix unlike any we saw in Harry Potter. ;)
Yes, apparently that was the scene that Lucy talked about in the interview. :rommie: It was kind of odd, since Ruby and the skeleton seemed to disappear when they went into the fire.

This was certainly a great episode for Fisher. She's adjusting to her new reality and becoming a part of the team very quickly-- I loved that shot of the three newbies standing side by side having just blown away the Deadite. And her response to Ash's cheesy come ons was surprising and refreshing.

Kelly and Pablo were hilarious. Apparently she wasn't prepared for the kick from that gun. :rommie:

And, awww, Ash bailed on them to save their lives. He's a real sweetheart underneath it all-- maybe not so underneath. Of course, we know that the Angels will find him just in time to save his ash. :mallory:

And the final shot?
Very nice. :D I love how they're making the original cabin the object of the quest, so to speak. It brings everything full circle.

Re: final shot.

The cabin was nice... but I howled at the idea the hand walked itself all the way there from the Brujo's house. :guffaw:

Of course, I also laughed at the idea of a naked, ash covered Ruby (in a much improved state of dress) finding her Dodge Charger so easily.

I get that she probably took a shower at the Brujo's home before she left, but where did she get the stylish, form fitting clothes? Pablo's uncle was shorter and thicker than Ruby was... er... is. ;)

Weird episode but still brought the humour.

They did the deadite killing gang thing very well for only 7 episodes buildup, I loved their little scene together. It's not often Evil Dead gets anything anywhere near this upbeat.

I knew Ash was going to ditch them to do it alone, but not like that. We can all see his point, they know how to look after themselves if one or two come calling now, but going back to that literal hell hole isn't something they'd survive.

Not sure why Lucy went back to a body double for this episode after Spartacus but people change. Little more worried about the fact her watch was melted to her wrist, yikes.

The final shot was great though. :D

Probably. They still managed to not bring up her identity and history with Ash, so it looks like we're headed for a big showdown at the cabin in Ep 9 or 10.

I think its ep 9 that TPTB really decided Ruby's history, IIRC from Lucy's interviews.

When Ruby sat up from the ashes last week, I recalled Lucy's comments re: "Xena:WP" that when you don't see her face in fight scenes, its a double. I'm sure the same goes for nude scenes. In fact I also recall one of her very recent interviews where she's laughing at the number (4?) of body doubles used for her nude scenes on "Salem"... and the very different "assets" these women had from not just her but each other.

The theme music on this reminds me of a piece from the "Dead Zone" movie, they might have used it in the series too. Anybody else?

On the topic of nudity, in regards to this episode, for a few seconds, I began to think about how it was portrayed here. We have nude Ruby, who's powerfully feminine and formidable fighter; heck, she just came out of a pit of fire. She knows what she's doing.

The other time we see nudity is with that cheesy '80s pinup in the militia's bunker -- a group of weak, willfully dumb, sexist manchildren who clearly have no idea what they're doing or what they're up against. Ruby's nudity could be about second chances, or her unstoppable nature, or any other reason. The pinup's nudity, however, was just straight up objectifying, with no real thought put into it. It's probably not intentional at all by the creators, but it was a good juxtaposition, especially since the show rarely features nudity in the first place, which is probably why I started to wonder about it. Even the sex scene in the first episode had clothes on.

Also, seeing Kelly, Pablo, and Fisher blow that Deadite away made me think about the diversity on the show -- it very much solidified that the current world was different than what we had seen in the movies. The movies had virtually an all-white cast, and yet with this lineup, we have a young angry Jewish woman, the cowardly but driven Latino kid, and a determined black female cop as primary heroes. None of them look like the action heroes of Ash's time -- there'd be more assured, stronger men, for one thing. Times are changing, and Ash is slowly getting used to it, in that he's getting more and more paternal with the gang. Indeed, that they fight a gang of racists -- and even a Deadite made from a racist's body -- continues with the series' theme of showing Ash's slow adaptation to the modern world (not that he ever would have joined up with the militia in the first place, of course. Even he's too smart for that.). This diverse group of 4 people outwit an entire militia stuck in yesterday, and make them see the truth of the world, as Ash explained to Fisher.

Of course, I also laughed at the idea of a naked, ash covered Ruby (in a much improved state of dress) finding her Dodge Charger so easily.
That actually threw me off for a couple of seconds.

I get that she probably took a shower at the Brujo's home before she left, but where did she get the stylish, form fitting clothes? Pablo's uncle was shorter and thicker than Ruby was... er... is. ;)
Perhaps one of the corpses in the restaurant....

My first thought during the final scene was "Aww. Thing found his way home!"
Hey, a crossover. :D

It's probably not intentional at all by the creators, but it was a good juxtaposition.

I don't know, there was a focus on both. The militia were hunkered down and avoiding reality and reason, which came knocking on their door pretty violently.

Then again there were two female militia members *shrugs*

But I agree about the diversity of the cast, Ash has been shown to be adaptable when needed, and smart enough. He just needs a bigger push than most people.
