Ash vs Evil Dead (new tv series)

I'm really appreciating the Ash/Pablo matchup, even if they didn't spend a lot of time together this episode. Ash was his usual sexist a-hole self, but by contrast, we have Pablo who is just so adorably awkward towards the woman he loves. Both Ash and Pablo were pretty cringeworthy, but for their own reasons. I love how fleshed out they are.

As for the episode itself, considering the claustrophobia of the past few episodes, I really like that we're seeing action spill over to the normal world. The basis of the first two movies, after all, was that Ash was trapped in the cabin, and then the last few episodes followed suit -- Kelly's home, the bookstore, Brujo's cabin. For this show, it's been awhile since we've seen an action scene out in the open with innocent, nameless bystanders.

And with that said, I love how the team is finally gelling together. They fought not one, but two Deadites and handled themselves well, instead of getting thrashed around as usual (well, Ash...). Lastly, Kelly can be terrifying when she's mad, and let's take note of how, even for a TV-MA show, her Deadite's defeat was obscured by the meat slicer. It's not one for Evil Dead to have constraint, but maybe it's a case of using the audience's imagination against them to make an even gorier killing.

It'd be funny if that was the last we saw of Lucy Lawless. Thrown in the fire than never mentioned again ala Deep Blue Sea.

You have a twisted sense of humor, Mr. A!

Lucky for me, according to IMDB that's not gonna happen. :techman:

I admit it's twisted but after all the publicity you have to admit that would be a bold moment. Maybe if it was a Whedon show... ;)
Like the special guest stars on Police Squad!. :rommie:

The first time I saw the "kids never die" trope subverted was in the 80s remake ("re-envisioning"?) of "The Blob". The heroine struggles to lead a child to safety through the sewers. There are a couple of "close calls", but you naturally expect the kid to make it. Just before they reach the exit, the child falls into the water. Naturally, we (well, I) expected a last rescue rescue, but when something erupts from the water, the young boy is engulfed within the protoplasm, his outer tissues already dissolved! D*mn! That freaked the h3ll outa' me! I will admit I was rather "bothered" by this outcome as I kept to a friend, "No! You just don't DO that to a kid in a monster movie! Some things are 'sacred'!" Which is no doubt WHY they did it, to truly rattle the audience's expectations.

Of course, one can note the trope was subverted years earlier in a far more remembered film, "Jaws". No, it wasn't a "supernatural" or a "sci-fi" horror film, but I think the point is equally applicable in Spielberg's iconic thriller. Ironically, I had not yet seen "Jaws" (well, not in its entirety) when I saw the remake of "The Blob", so I was not aware the trope had already been subverted.

Sincerely,

Bill

There have been some crazy and outrageous kills on this show so far, but this episode seemed to have some of the craziest yet. Was definitely not expecting the kid to die in such a gruesome way, and the deli slicer scene managed to be both cringe-inducing and incredibly hilarious as the same time. :D

Shame that the show apparently isn't getting a big audience, because it certainly deserves one.

I don't know what the ratings are, but it must be doing okay if they've already renewed it.

One of the reasons I like watching the ep earlier in the day on the internet, is that I feel my view is "counted" by STARZ, unlike when I watch when its broadcasted on the TV.

IIRC, one of the TV rating scores is "day of show + 7" which garners up the Neilson families and we internet viewers over the week.

I've been watching it earlier in the day on On Demand, so hopefully that gets counted as well.

I know Ash has the chainsaw and the boomstick but I still think that Ruby could wipe the floor with him!

I might be a little biased though.

Wow, already? And I won't have time to watch until I get home this afternoon. Aargh. :scream:

By "great," I assume you mean "lots of Fisher." :D

Who'd have thought Ash would get anywhere with Fisher? They got some good mileage out of the handcuffing. Hell, even Ruby woke up covered in ash. ;)

I think my favorite scene was Kelly getting familiar with her gun.

If I ever buy a Dodge Challenger I'm going to ask for the Kandarian Dagger option.

Overall, a lot of fun, squeezed a lot into those scant minutes and left wanting more.

I assume you Lucy Lawless fans have watched Spartacus, if not, you might want to check it out.

Rule #1. Always listen to Ash.

Rule #2. When being hunted, always ask the Big Life Questions.

Rule #3. It is always a good time to flirt.

I have not watched Spartacus. Too much violence and gore for my liking. I know AvED has plenty but it's done in a comedic way, so it doesn't bother me.
