I liked the redemption arc for Bronze Tiger (Turner) here. Hopefully we'll see more of him going forward. Michael Jai White has an amazing voice. On the other hand, I'm surprised to see Brick apparently killed off, since he's a member of Diaz's Longbow Hunters in the comics. I kept expecting the two of them to turn out to be in cahoots, but we only got a scene or two of them together.
The action here was as impressive as you'd expect from a James Bamford-directed episode, and they made terrific use of their cell-block set and its multiple levels in that long single-take fight scene. Still, it's hard to believe Diaz could infiltrate this maximum-security prison so easily. Wouldn't they have cameras everywhere and security checkpoints for anyone who wanted to get in? I mean, sure, the glib answer is that prison security is about keeping people from getting out, but many escape plans involve help from outside, so incoming people should be checked just as thoroughly. It would've been more credible if Diaz had had the help of the Hunters instead of just one bought-off guard.
That episode felt like a season finale. Heck I wouldn't have minded if it was a series finale. Man this season really has a season 1, 2, and 5 feel to it. That's a good thing.
It was a finale of sorts, for the prison arc. It seems that a number of shows lately, including
Arrow last season, have started splitting their seasons into 2 or 3 shorter arcs more like cable or Netflix seasons, rather than trying to drag out a single Big Bad arc through a whole season. Last year we had the first half's arc about Cayden James and his league of villains with Diaz as a minor character, and then Diaz came to the fore as the big bad when that wrapped up. Looks like the same thing has happened here, and I suspect either the Longbow Hunters, Stanley, or both will emerge as the major threat going forward.
Anyway, it looks like next week will be about restoring things to the status quo of Ollie as Green Arrow, in time for the big switcheroo in "Elseworlds." I wonder if we'll discover the identity of New Green Arrow next week too.
