Are You Handy? 2

Nice work, Seeker - your tile choice goes really well with the overall scheme. The tile saw was a good purchase because you may want to use it again in the future. We sure did.

:bolian: Beautiful! I love the contrast between the counter tops, appliances, cabinets and the tile. It really works well together but helps define the space. Does the area look bigger now? I would assume that the horizontal lines and the color choice would make it appear so.

Seeker,

That tile work is fantastic. I swear, the more I do this type of stuff, the more I study tile layout and designs in movie backgrounds and places I visit.

Seriously, there could be a nude scene in a movie and I'll remark to my son, "Check out that crown molding and wainscoting in the background."

Great job, TheSeeker! Looks as though it's been done by a professional. Very stylish kitchen, by the way.

My friend just bought a house and wants to do some work on it so I have a feeling it'll get some more action.

It does look bigger now, and the colour really adds to the room too. I can't take too much credit for the overall effect though since my wife pretty much designed the new kitchen all by herself. My input mainly consisted of agreeing with her choices when she asked me about them.

One thing I can take credit for though is insisting on having the floor tiles set diagonally rather than at right angles to everything. I think that is something else which really adds to the space. I'll have to post a picture of it sometime.

Nice work Seeker, it looks great!

I'm excited. I am starting to build a patio next week.

One small question though-anyone know of a type of bamboo (or other privacy-type plant) that doesn't spread aggressively?

It is my understanding that if/when trimmed, bamboo can be contained to one area.

I don't know that there are any and i don't think you can keep it contained. I worked in 2 local greenhouse/growers for a couple of years and although we carried bamboo whenever anyone asked for it we tried our hardest to discourage them from buying/planting it. It is incredibly invasive. It has underground shoots and there really is very little you can do to keep it contained.

I've decided to reclaim my old Tonka trucks and breathe a bit more life into them. I played with these as a kid and my kids are now playing with them and they look a little bit worse for the wear 30 some odd years on.

So:

The starting point

After a good scraping and two coats of rust reformer

the end result.

I've finished 3 and have 6 more to do.

I'm debating on starting a cottage industry of homemade soaps, candles, and such. Anyone know if this is financially feasible?

blab sells some very nice homemade soaps through Etsy.com. You might want to take a look at that.

The biggest problem that I find with having an online business (I have my own little store, plus a couple of books available through Amazon) is advertising. It's hard to sell if nobody knows you're there, and advertising is expensive.

That looks amazing! Just like new.

Nice work. It makes me want to dig out my old tonka trucks.

Thanks :D

Thinking about how old they are, I probably sealed in all the old lead based paint.

Looks pretty nice. Take good care of them. They're practically antiques. :D

They're at least 35 years old, I don't know if that qualifies as antique status or not.

I'm just glad my kids are able to play with and enjoy them now.

Those tires need a little ArmorAll, dude :p

They do look really tired and old now, don't they?

btw.. nice restoration!

Thanks. To do it right, I should have taken them apart -wheels off and the whole nine yards, but they're for the kids to play with.

That's what I was thinking, don't you think you could have gotten a nice price at an auction and then bought some nice new toys for the kiddies, like similar things but new, plus bought yourself a new TV, car or house?
(I'm thinking what the kind of toys I used to play with usually sells for on auction these days.)

^^ I'd rather keep the old ones. I like having things with the weight of History to them.
