Are You Handy? 2

All our new windows went in today - 9 total, one of which is a picture window. Sure its awesome to have new, energy efficient, vinyl windows all around but now the real work begins :eek: We had to start with the bathroom window - to finish it (as much as possible after the day job) so we can begin taking showers again. Its in the shower so it got moved to the top of the list.

Originally we tiled around a 2x3 for the old window's first shelf. It was nice, but when we knew we were replacing the window we wanted an upgrade. Yesterday, I spent the day preparing windows for the contractor. A few weeks ago we found a sweet length of black granite for our new shelf. All I had to do was cut it to length and get to business. The rest of the job was to cut the new casings, put in the new corner molding and then waterproof the whole shebang with vinyl caulking.

Tomorrow after work, I'm going to get the last of the molding around the top of the window and finally wrap this bathroom up. The contractors pulled out the old casing on two windows and replaced them with the new pine I cut ahead of time - so wrapping those up comes next.

When it comes to electronics I am handy. I can build computers from scratch without batting an eye. I can set up complicated home theater systems like it is child's play. I am 24/7 Tech support for friends and family.

Put a piece of wood in front of me and I'm lost. I would need an illustrated, 10 page step by step manual just to nail 2 pieces of wood together. The same thing applies to anything else "handy". At best I can change the taps on a sink. With vehicles I am limited to changing a light bulb, doing an oil change or replacing windshield wipers.

The apple certainly fell a long way from the tree. My father finished his entire basement. Bathroom, TV room, laundry room etc. Everything from the framing to the electrical and plumbing and finishing was all done by him from scratch and to code. He built a high quality fence and back deck. Extended the upper floor and put in an extra bedroom. Put in hardwood floors, remodeled the kitchen. He is even better with cars. Yet without fail he calls me multiple times per week because he lost a bookmark, forgot how to print. Or because he has a blank screen after watching a DVD, and he can't remember how to press 1 button to switch back to watching TV.

Nice new windows, your heating bill will like you this winter with these compared to the old ones I've seen pictured.

When we replaced the one in our house the first thing I noticed was how much quieter it was.

^ This was the first thing Abby told me she noticed when she called to say the insallers were all done. btw, they did the whole house (8 regular and 1 picture window) in roughly 4 hours.

We've made pretty good progress on the renovations to our interior windows since the install. Yesterday, after I wrapped up the bathroom molding (I got held up with a supply issue), I started work on the large living room picture window where I replaced a few split casings, broke up the top and bottom molding with decorative blocks and added new flat molding columns. Hope to wrap this up today and will hold off with photos until the whole thing has seen paint and caulking.

I wish I had been here for the replacement installation just to have seen the process. Still, I'm not as intimidated by windows as I once was. Pulling them apart and getting to know the guts of the thing these last few weeks has been quite an education.

<edit>

And with the bamboo shades finally hung

I think we can finally call this whole project a "wrap" ;)
