Anyone pick up a NES mini today? Or planning on getting one eventually?

My new hobby is adding all the NES Classics to my watch list that greedy and moronic eBay sellers are trying to get $1,000-$75,000 for, and watching them not sell. It's even more pathetic to read their item descriptions where they say they're donating the money to "charity," which of course they only wrote after all the other rational eBay sellers started selling theirs for $200.

I saw rumours starting around New Years that they're planning a SNES release or something similar in this line, and if that sells, maybe others. I suppose that amount of demand and near instant sales is a good sign for most companies, but maybe they could ramp up the production numbers a little next time.

Wow. That's insane. And even $200 is too much.

My favorite eBay listing has one for $10,000 + FREE SHIPPING! I wasn't sure about pulling the trigger but that free shipping is hard to resist.

It's like this rare Lego Mars Rover set I've hunted for that sold for $30 but now goes for $200. I imagine they all just sit there in their precious little boxes for eternity perhaps being bought but never being opened or played with.

In 20 years, maybe. Too much money to make selling those games in the Virtual Console for now.

Goldeneye has too many issues involved with it's rights to end up on a future Virtual Console. I think at one point Microsoft tried to put it on Xbox Live Arcade but had to cancel it because of the rights issues. I'm not sure what Nintendo would have to do if they wanted it, but I'm sure it's too much for them to justify it.

Speaking of scalpers, Switch pre-orders are being sold on eBay as we speak. It gets even crazier when you realize they're just pre-orders and the winner of the auction will most likely still have to pay full price for the console on release day.

Three words: late stage capitalism.

But we had that for the original N64 so what was the big issue? Did they lose the rights to the game or something? I still have the cartridge and memory pak but no console as it kind of broke.

Often, media rights are hashed out not only over individual components like images, music, coding, and characters, but also platforms. For example, if you have a game you're proposing to a publishing company, you have to secure rights to play it on every platform you wish to make it available. Each platform (NES, N64, Playstation, etc.) has their own media rights requirements.

Quite frankly, it's a minor miracle any game gets released.

Ah I see.

The rights where for the N64 version only, and the people who own the rights to James Bond might have changed and refuse to grant a license for a port or a remake...
Heck, it's not even part of the Rare Replay collection for the XB1...

Seems like a waste of money to me. I have several of those lying around in a similar setup, only I didn't blow money on an NES Mini just to have a nice shell to put it in.

Yeah but hey if you can do that, then why the hell not? I get that it's a waste of money, but hey some people do things like this.

Well, I got one of these. During one of the 20 minute windows when Amazon had a handful in stock, we pounced!

It's pretty great - spent last night playing some Bubble Bobble, then getting thorougly lost in Metroid. I still want to make a more capable device out of a Pi. But this doesn't require tinkering with emulators, you just plug it in and start playing, so it's better for casual nostalgia.
