Anyone else think the ending of "things past" kinda sucked?*SPOILERS*

spoilers

I mean yeah, Odo was so keen on upholding order he didn't conduct this investigation properly and those innocents died.

ODO
I thought of myself as the outsider, the Shape-shifter who
cared only about justice. It never occurred to me that I could
fail. But I did. And I've never wanted anyone to know the truth... that
seven years ago, I allowed three
innocent men to die.
[...]
KIRA
But I need to know that no other innocent people died on your
watch, Odo... That this was the only time.

but wouldn't there be much more to talk about than that?

I mean about Odo's "real role" during the occupation as portrayed by Kurtwood Smith? Those parts were written for a reason, no?
I mean the part where giving sentences of 5 years in a labor camp or turning people over to the Cardassian authorities for questioning (for basically standing in the wrong place at the wrong time) doesn't seem a big deal for him.
What about his cyinical views on the Bajorans- that they are responsible for the Cardassians' actions?

Those were strong scenes, but at the end Odo just whines ho he had failed in that one incident. BIG wasted opportunity in my opinion.
Sisko should have had a talk with him like with the guard dude in "Past Tense".
Exploring what became of the Odo from "Necessary Evil" later on is a great idea, but this episode only went halfway through with it.

What do you think they should have done instead?

Re: Anyone else think the ending of "things past" kinda sucked?*SPOILE

He was caught by Sisko, Garak and Dax being a complete asshole. One of them should have a talk with him. Both Garak and Sisko would have worked imo.

They kinda turned it into some "Necessary Evil" reprise in some way, like Odo, like Kira, got his hands dirty in those dark times. I just think that is too weak, given what we saw in the Episode.
I realize anything more might have damaged the character and his place in the crew. Also, one would wonder why no one ever thought of confronting him with it. Especially Quark. It would also kinda contradict what we learned about odo in the episodes before, when there should be enough people who had been present then, who should know better. So I can certainly understand they didn't take it further.

The other thing I always wondered was how Garak managed to not learn any lessons about his attitudes towards Bajorans after having it literally beaten into him.

That said, I did like the episode--I think maybe it could've been expanded, though.

Odo couldn't have been very old then...

And hopefully he learned from that to always try to save the innocent.

They wanted him to have the talk with the person whom would be most disappointed, Kira. She would have also been the person he felt the most shame in letting down. Garak is no one to lecture another person about morality and Quark would have semi joked about it, wondering if he could get Odo to look the other way again.

I wouldn't want Garak to have lectured him, just telling him that he wasn't the impartial outsider he still claimed to have been. But I agree the Kira scene was good and necessary.
A good follow up to a possible confrotation about Odo's "collaborator" phase might have been during th events of the Dominion presence on Deep Space Nine, when Kira realizes she has become a part of the game.

Funnily enough, Kira decides to organize a resistance, while Odo again sides with the evil guys. And everyone forgives him...(j/k)
