Xena is against Gabrielle fighting because she doesn't want her to lose her innocence, so to speak. Once you pick up a weapon, and intentionally (or unintentionally) kill someone, you are forever changed. Hardened in a way.

Gabrielle is supposed to be 16-18 at the start of the series, Xena's allowing her to tag along at this stage because she gives her a sense of normality, a world view that doesn't include violence as the default response to every problem, every thought. By protecting Gabrielle's "blood innocence" it allows Xena an opportunity to see what her own life could have been without the descent into murder.
Remember what she said to Gabby in the teaser.
Gabrielle: “I don’t want to learn to kill. I want to learn to survive.”
Xena: “All right. The rules of survival. Number one. If you can run, run. Number two. If you can’t run-- surrender, and then
run. Number three. If you’re outnumbered, let them fight each other, while you run. Number four--”
Gabrielle: “Wait-- More running?”
Xena: “No. Four is where you talk your way out of it, and I know you can do that. It’s wisdom before weapons, Gabrielle. The
moment you pick up a sword, you become a target. And the moment you kill--”

Xena: “Everything changes. Everything.” (Xena stops and is listening intently)

...but I liked the finale and am even cool with them not "ending up together" since I know this lifetime is only one of the many they will spend with one another.

Also, the way Rob Tapert recut the final scene for the 'Director's version", where we only see Gabrielle and Xena standing on the ship as the camera pulls away and not "just" Gabrielle reinforces to me their connectedness does not end with death.

The fact that they always find each other throughout different lifetimes does make me happy. Which is why I like to stop at "Soul Possession." I'd rather end with instead of

instead of .Catching up on this thread has inspired me to watch an episode or two tonight. I disagree with the article about the show being too cheesy for new generations. That's part of the appeal.
I didn't like the finale but I think it could have been a lot worse. Still it's a shame they never did a movie (even a TV movie) a few years or more after the show ended. Would have been a great way to end on a better note (and take advantage of improving production standards such as HD and better CGI. :P).

Welcome ialfan! I usually like the cheese too,
but certain eps like Vanishing Act overdue it, even for my tastes.
There were plans (Tapert's) for a couple TV movies, but issues over who "owned" X:WP was a big stumbling block for years.
I watched Cradle of Hope today. I liked the twist at the end with the box being empty. I have to wonder how long it will be before we see Xena's reputation start to change.
I find it kind of funny that the guy who wrote this went on to win multiple Emmy and WGA awards for working on The Sopranos, create Boardwalk Empire, which got him another WGA award, and a Golden Globe, and would get an Oscar nomination for his Wolf of Wall Street script.
Xena is fun, but it's not really the kind of show that gets people that kind of recognition.

IIRC, one of the writer/producers lamented at the negative way potential employers and old friends treated him not because Xena was a fantasy show, but because Xena was a syndicated show.
But despite that millstone, look at where some of "Xena's people" ended up.
John Fawcett directed 6 Xenas, including my fav "When Fates Collide" ( and interestingly enough, "Fallen Angel" which is referenced in WFC as a play Gabrielle has written), he's directed multiple series over the years and is the main producer and frequent director of another fav show of mine, "Orphan Black".
Liz Freidman, a producer on multiple Xena eps, and writer of 3 went on to help produce multiple eps of House and Elementary and Netflix' Jessica Jones.
Everyone knows that Karl Urban went from Xena to Lord Of the Rings and now is safely ensconced into the nuStar Trek franchise.
But Shiri Appleby who played in 2 eps of Xena went on to multiple shows and is gaining notice in "Unreal", a fictional show about a reality show.
There's much more, but those reference current hits on the news today.
Well, if Lucy can't be in the Xena reboot, the Huff Post has another reboot she could be in line to play.

Kind of a shame we never got to have an episode with Poseidon. It would have been cool! But also very costly.
Sorry to go off topic here but that "Jane Bond" article bugged me. I think a female Bond could be cool, but they picked almost all American actresses, except Emilia Clarke, and I really think if you're going to go so far as make Bond a woman, then you at least need to leave her British. I would say making him American would be OK, and making him a woman would be OK, but if you're going to do both then there's not point even making her Bond.
