Any Love for Insurrection?

The main criticisms (see above) of INS can't really be refuted, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

It's probably the least rewatchable of all the TNG movies, even including NEM.
Ouch. I don't know, I'd probably take INS over NEM any day. While NEM isn't all bad, it just hits what few cringe notes that INS managed to miss.

It feeling like an episode of TNG is a plus to me. I really like Insurrection. First Contact is the better made movie, but also quite a generic Hollywood action movie. I feel the same about TWOK. INS felt a lot more like TNG to me.

So yeah, loads of love for Insurrection from me.

Unfortunately, Insurrection just isn’t that interesting. The Baku are twee and forgettable and Picard’s romantic interest Anij – played by Donna Murphy is drippy and dull. It’s often said that there aren’t enough roles in Hollywood for older women, and Aniij should have been a wonderful chance to redress the balance. Sadly Donna Murphy can’t hold a candle to Patrick Stewart and we instead rely on Picard to tell us why he finds her so appealing.

‘will the regenerative properties of the planet cause my hair follicles to regenerate?’

The film also suffers from an uneven tone, the action sequences feel shoe-horned into story rather than key plot points. The film should have shown more bravery and focused on the romantic relationship between Picard and Anij. It’s clear that the film aims for a more light-hearted tone and this means that there is a lot more humour in this outing. Much of the humour is crass and some of it is just plain stupid, including a god-awful scene in which Commander Riker flies the Enterprise with a cheap looking joystick!

Commander Riker grips his stick.

The story is predictable and hackneyed, following a linear narrative that’s broken into very distinctive acts, much like a play. The generic action film ending is the most disappointing denouement to any Star Trek film.

Jerry Goldsmith’s score is OK, but not as notable as the excellent score that he provided for Star Trek: First Contact. The special effect work is now looking dated - and some scenes on the collector weren't even finished!!

Insurrection feels a little frivolous, the pseudo-philosophical political allegory concerning the forced-relocation of the Baku is both obvious and trite. Still, I actually like Insurrection, there are many aspects of the movie that work well. The film takes care to present the Enterprise crew as well-rounded and likeable people, Patrick Stewart takes centre stage and puts in a lovely nuanced performance. I also think that Jonathan Frakes directs the film well, not only during the action sequences, but also some of the smaller character moments such as when Geordi see’s a sunset for the first time.

The story was boring.
Most of the FX were crap.
The sets were cheap looking and small scale.
The people who you were supposed to be rooting for were utter tossers.
A lot of the humor was cringeworthy.
There was absolutely no spectacle or 'wow' moments whatsoever.
The whole thing just reeked of complacency and a complete lack of ambition after the previous two films.
Even goldsmith's score was totally 'by the numbers'

It's shit.

Only the final frontier is worse.

I suppose some of the locations and the odd bit of cinematography were ok, and the cast seemed generally on form, but that's it for me.

I'd rather watch any of the other three TNG movies over it.

That's the wonderful thing about opinions. We're free to disagree with them. I'm sure you disagree with my assessment of the movie.

I ca n find some room to agree with you. While I don't think the special effects were crap, I think they could have been better. The scenes in the planet were fine, it's the scenes in space I thought could use some improvements. I did like how you could see Data etc al. through the window of the shuttle craft.

I don't hate the film, obviously I'm making my points in the style of your typical internet forum. I still sort of enjoy it when I watch it, but it's once every 4 to 5 years or so as opposed to at least yearly with most trek movies. Even the worst trek movies have some merit for this fan.

I think the visuals just look so dated now and were pretty shoddy in part in 1998. Like you said the space scenes are probably the worst and look no better than the series in my opinion. The FX in generations are far slicker and way more epic in scope for me, and that's pretty unforgivable considering the higher budget and the fact that's it's four years newer. The only decent FX in the film for me is some of the space battle, when the enterprise has all the smoke coming out of the nacelles, but these bits were all too brief. Compare other films around that time, it was only a year before the matrix, which didn't have a much bigger budget, it makes this film look embarrassing.

It was such a missed opportunity when the dominion war was raging at the time. Even when I saw it on the big screen I was like 'is that it?'

At least nemesis had a bit of balls, despite it's faults.

I think there's massive problems with the underlying logic of the plot and how things play out, but I like it more than NEM. Damning with faint praise I suppose.

The real tragedy is the criminal waste of F. Murray Abraham. The guy played Salieri in Amadeus, and this is what he gets reduced to?

At least he isn't playing Poop? ;D

Yes, all the flaws in Insurrection are true. Of course, I'm the type of person who can watch for pretty cinematography and a few cute scenes or lines. I did go see Waterworld three times in the theater. >.>

I've posted a lot on my dislike (the only film in the franchise I actively dislike) for Insurrection. In summary- you can't aim to be mediocre with a multi-million dollar space adventure movie. INS's greatest sin was that it was a big-budget movie in a long-running space action / adventure franchise that delivered virtually nothing. It was tepid, awkward, small, and safe. And, again...it's not that it had great ambition and failed to achieve it (TFF, TUC, GEN)...it's that it had no ambition to begin with.

That said- it's still better than A LOT of what gets produced these days, and I'll take Picard and Riker over Ant Man and The Flash (or whatever) any day.

And- I'm the guy who loves TFF and thinks NEM was a strong TNG movie...so take what I think with a grain of salt for sure...haha!

I have no hate or love.......just meh. It reminds me of a typical TNG episode, just longer.

I actually think that's what made it awful. It was a $55M major motion picture that felt no better than the bottom 1/3 of the standard TNG syndicated television episodes.

If the Baku hadn't been such sanctimonious Aryan know-it-alls who were so noble and good that they cast their own children out for not toeing the line I might have like the film better.
Also I hated the return of wacky Data.
Doesn't leave much left I suppose.

They booted them because they tried overthrow the leaders.
Look I can't talk - I'm probably going to boot my oldest son for doing the same but no-ones going to admire me for it. ;)
I just couldn't find it in myself to care less about the Baku. I care more about the people of Veridian 3 more than them and I would have sacrificed them for Kirk.
