An Alien Series Lead

It's be fun having a Tellarite captain. He'd insult and belittle all his subordinates as a matter of culture, they'd give it right back to stay in his good graces, and he'd get upset if his subordinates didn't argue with him about every order.

Technically, wasn't Saru Captain of the Discovery in Season 3?

Yes, I'd love to see that. Should definitely make things more interesting. Reminds me of a Tellarite Captain character I once wrote for an RPG. He had quite an attitude and didn't always get along with everyone, and was in fact happier when causing a ruckus.

^Saru was the captain perhaps, but still not the series' lead. Strictly speaking, there's no reason for those two to be the same character, though this convention has been followed in almost all series.

I'm gonna say no here. Star Trek's supposed to be about humanity. The purpose of the non-human characters like Spock and Data is to shine a light on things humans do from another perspective, it's fundamentally a supporting role.

FARSCAPE had the entire cast not be human except for Crichton. That worked in spades.

Honestly, I'd love to see the Jim Henson Company get another space series. They are one of the few production companies to make their aliens truly alien.
Yes, please. Farscape was amazing with the creature work, especially Pilot. I would love a similar show in Star Trek with a human as the first officer/executive officer, and able to explore humanity from a little bit different perspective.

FarScape was awesome! I would love to see JHC develop another sci-fi show, their work on Rygel and Pilot brought so much life to the characters that I genuinely forgot they were actually puppets most of the time (whilst over on Trek there was such bland and forgettable human characters like Chakotay, Kim and Mayweather).

Definitely would work for me. How better to explore humanities issues and complexity than have the token human on the show offer their insight on the issue of the week.

These alien characters all tend to have something very Human that audiences can relate to. Most alien races in Trek represent an aspect of Humanity--either past or present--for good or for ill.

To have something like Kosh as the lead---you'd have to do it in the manner of Mailer's "Harlot's Ghost" where you can play up mythic aspects of the character through the lens of others.

Good point. But he was literally the only human. Principle still works, because ALL those characters got lots of growth and development.

A show like FARSCAPE, Browder got top billing, but in a lot of ways, everyone was a co-lead character.
